Ok...I know this has been covered before in different threads but I need to find out. My '04 has a 4.6 in it. I want to removed the resonator. I was told by one exhaust shop that it is actually another converter and they can not remove it. I didn't think it was a converter because there are no O2 sensors behind it...only in front of it. Has anyone has this done and was there any affect on emissions testing?

take it off fella... it will not effect your emissions testing... i took mine off on my 03 X, and didnt cause an issue...

as long as there is no sensor behind the ( RESONATOR ) then your good...

it will make your muffler sound better !, plus probably give you better MPG, and a small bit of power... since your freeing up the exhaust

That's what I was thinking...it's a resonator since there is no sensor behind it. But the one shop I took it to told me it's another converter and they can't remove it. And when u said no problems with emissions....do you have emissions testing there?

yes PA has emissions testing...

passed with no problem

Ok...nevermind...just saw your from PA and since I used to live there I know you have very strict emissions testing.

!!!! STOP !!!! Here in alaska they do a visual inspection of your exhaust system, and i have heard that major modifications can fail your test. Talk to one of your IM techs about what is a pass fail. Worst case... you buy a cat...break the insides out, and have it welded in to pass the visual inspection...like me lol.

well....I dunno what I'll do because I believe they do perforn a visual inspection to make sure everything is there.

they shouldn't care if its removing a resonator, it does nothing related to emissions at all, simply removes some harshness from the exhaust note.

Yeah...that's the problem.....is it a resonator or is it a converter?

Cut it off and tell a muffler shop to put a pipe in place. That's what I did and it looks great!!! Just tell them it had a bad hole there and you just wanted to save them time so you chopped it off:D

well....i'd do that but if it's an actual converter and the emission testing station does the visual inspection and doesn't see it then I'm up the creek so to say.

If it's anything like my 02', it's a pain to see anyway. Here is a picture of how mine looks. You can see where the Y meets to form a single pipe(where the cat/resonator should be) and then it's off to the muffler. If anyone was just looking this over, they'd never know it was missing:)

I might just have to do that...LOL.

ok your truck should have 4 cats. two on each banks (left and right)4 o2 sensors. one o2 in front of each cat. you can cut the rear two cats out and not set a check engin light. thats what i did. now after that your exaust should collect after that muffler. than resinator a couple of feet befor the tail pipe ends

Yeah...I know that if there is no sensor behind the cat/resonator it won't trip the light...just worried that they might notice it on the visual inspection during emissions testing.

hahahah got you. im a inspector here in virginia your best bet is to just gut them. im only requred to look to see it there in. not if they work ;) . the body of the cat needs to be there

there isnt 4 cats on the 3rd gen X's

there are 2 located on the Y-Pipe. 1 on each side, then once the Y meets a single pipe, there is a ( RESONATOR ) with no sensor behind it. then shortly after is the muffler...

that was the set up on my 03 X...

now with my 05 X, i was missing the resonator like so...

just hollow out that 3rd cat if some one one remove it for you, like in my case they didnt want to take it out... so i had them install a hi flow cat that didnt have any guts lol.

Caldwell is correct!

Here's my drawing I did for another member and this is how the cats are on the 3rd gen Ex/Mountys:D The first drawing show's the part in question(blue) is it a resonator or cat? Regardless, I didn't need it so it's gone
