Exhaust Question

muffler

Yes, chop both the muffler and resonator off!! I did that and replaced it with a flowmaster.. sounds unbelievable but not too loud.. it also woke up the engine.. throttle response improved dramatically.. I thought the sound was a little loud in the cabin though.. so I removed the paneling behind the back seat and lined it with dynomat.. it turned out perfect..

thats great to hear. my mechanic said he coulnt take that resonator off cause it would put the engine light on. Getting cut off next week!

Removing the resonator (muffler) will NOT throw a check engine light. Think about finding a new mechanic. If your mechanic meant the catalytic converter, then that is true, it will throw a light.

I have the complete Magnaflow catback system on my '08 Sport Trac XLT 4x4 V8. The resonator was removed. No check engine light and the exhaust sound is awesome. I like the sound better than the system I had on the '08 Mustang GT I owned last year.

Do you hear a loud droning sound in the passenger area?

No drone at all with the Magnaflow system. I've had at least 4 Magnaflow catback systems, 3 were on Mustang GT's. Can't imagine Magnaflow would design a complete system to have a drone. It would be another thing if you customized and chopped up an exhaust system, with say no cats and had headers and no X or H pipe (on a dual exhaust), then there'd be a good chance any performance muffler could contribute to a drone.

I can sympathize trying to get a better exhaust sound on a limited budget. Sometimes there can be a risk and some downside not going with a system designed for your truck, unless you can find someone who's "patched" as system is happy with it and you can replicate it. Good luck with whatever way you go.

A hint with Magnaflow systems, call an online vendor like Performance Peddler, as they can usually give you a better price break when you call as Magnaflow restricts what a vendor can 'advertise' as a best price on Magnaflow systems. Been that way for a few years that I can remember.

That sounds(no pun intended) very encouraging. I am going to look into that. Do you happen to remember the part or order # for that Magnaflow kit? BTW, you should post a vid clip sometime of the outside and interior sound of your ST.
