Hey everyone- my first post. 2004 xlt sport v8 2dw street use only. K&N drop in only "upgrade" . I'm interested in upgrading the entire exhaust systems headers thru tips and thoughts.

that's the 4.6 V8, isn't it?

are there even headers that fit that engine in the Explorer?

doesn't look like it, yet. Unless something else fits, or TM is coming out with a header for that engine.

edit: I lied... looks like Summit Racing has JBA's Cat4ward headers for it, but they are shorties.

what RoadBully said.
They are short headers. Much shorter than OEM exhaust manifolds.

From everything I've read and heard, is that they will kill low-end torque.
Long tube headers are generally better, due to the collectors being farther away. That usually helps out with exhaust scavenging, and not losing too much backpressure.

I would def. go with high flow magnaflow cats and a magnaflow muffler. Just the magna flow muffler on mine almost made it sound like a v8 and you do have a v8 so imagine that!

Go to www.explorerexpress.com to look at the headers and catback they have. I would recommend a 70 series flowmaster. I have that with the third cat removed and it lets you know that it's there, but you can still cruise on the highway and not be annoyed. What is your ending goal? There are some better things you could do for the money it will cost to have a full exhuast put on.

magnaflow high flow cats, with either the magnaflow cat back (if you want it to sound only slightly beefer then stock) or Flowmaster 40 series.

Also pick up a K&N CAI. I wouldn't bother with headers unless you're gonna drop $1100 and have kooks make you some custom long tubes.

I got dual 40 series flows on my 01 sport and a lot of people think i got a V8 but I just got the 4.0 sohc engine.

do you have a sound clip by any chance?

so is the magnaflow sound way deeper than a 40 series flowmaster?? i have the 40 series on mine but would like something deeper, i know a V8 sound could never be replicated on a V6 (which i have) but would like to get it as deep as possible

Sorry for getting into your post LOUDAUG, but i just thought id ask since we're on the subject!

Yes magnaflow's are deeper than flowmasters. flowmasters kind of have that tinny sound to them you know? I will try to get a sound clip tomarrow and put it in this thread. It does have kind of the v8 gargle sound to it and is pretty deep.

i used to have a sound clip but i got another comp so i dont have it anymore. I need to eventually get a sound clip of it starting up and a drive by as well.

edgar is ur explorer a 6 or 8 cylinder.

I still got the stock 4 cats on my 01 sport but i wanna like remove like 2 of them. And eventually I might get a different exhaust maybe slp loudmouths or a super 44 series.

Anyways I'll ask my friend if he can come over and we can do a sound clip of me starting my explorer and a driving by video as well.

Alright here is a little clip of my Magnaflow. It's not the best quality because it was taken with a digital camera but you can hear it. This was back in April when all I had done was the TT and shackles.

i got a gibson system and i love it... u can notice it but its not loud

thanks for the clip! it does sound a hell of a lot better than the 40 series! i like it
