I have 90 ranger with a 2.9 that has a bad fuel pressure regulator. Would this be the only reason that it is smoking and the exhaust smells very strong?

my 01 sport sometimes when i turn it on sometimes has a sulfur and rotten egg smell i dunno why. So I might have the same problem as u but i am not to sure.

Mine used to smoke alot at start up but now it is off and on but is getting worse every week. I am going to replace the fpr but I want to make sure it won't need any other parts.

I think that would be your fuel pressure regulator. It is right on the fuel rails and looks like a circular thing. If you pull out the L shaped hose and it leaks any gas from there it is bad. You probably have the same problem I have but your havn't had it long enough to get to be the problem I have.

Smoke (bluish) just on startup that smells like burning oil is usually bad valve guides/stem seals, common on a high mileage engine. The oil on top of the head will drain back through the valves into the tops of the pistons when it's sitting.

Try looking in the rear view mirror (or have someone follow you) while coasting, foot off the gas, down a fairly long steep hill. If it puts out clouds of smoke then it may be the rings (worn out).

Excess fuel is a different smell, in fact you would smell raw gas, and the smoke is more black.

I think you're lookin' at a dead cat converter Sam...
