Exhaust sound tips

okay... so i did it today

i went to pep boys, and ended up buying the Cherrybomb Turbo.

It was only about 25 dollars, and it's giving me the sound I want, I still have to put the pipe on from the muffler back, but I'm doing that tomorrow... to cold right now!, but i'm going to look into having a resonator installed, just to bring the volume down a little, plus there's a little buzzing, but i'm confident with the additional piping tomorrow it'll go away.

when i had to drive to autozone to buy a clamp, i had NO muffler... sounded liek a beast.

to bad for sound regulations....

-josh

thanks for all the help guys, i really appreciate it.

I know what you mean when we did my exhaust we fired it up with no muffler it drew my dad out of the house asking if it was going to stay that loud.

Then i couldnt clamp down the pipe after the muffler tight enough and it kept coming apart while i was driving, what i difference with just the tailpipe. Had to have a friend weld it.

You should get some soundclips up when/if you get them

well, a day has gone by since installation, and it buzzes like a bumblebee.

it's horrible.

i put on the last piping from the muffler to the end, and it turned the volume to that of about stock, and it's buzzing like a biotch. i think i might either take it back off and do without, or i might just buy a 40 series, idk yet.

Yeah the Dynomax turbo I had buzzed like crazy too. I wasn't too fond of it, but it was still better than stock.

it's just kind of annoying, had to saw off the exhaust, get the right clamps.. all the time and money, and it sounds like crap. i guess it's just a trial and error thing. idk how much longer i'll have the explorer, it's running real rough, but i'd like to keep it and make it a trail rig, just to have for fun. gas prices are hurting me right now

Pepboys and it was $55, the turbo is cheaper.

Dan

IMO, the turbo sounds OKAY if you cut off about the last 3.5 feet of exhaust pipe, lol. nice hollow and deep rumble.

if you want something good for regular exhaust, go with the pro.

from what i've ALWAYS expeirience in the past, don't try and b e cheap to get around something, spend the money and do it right the first time.

that's my motive from now on.

Very good info grasped from this fourm. I do have a question as well.
I have a 1997 ford explorer SOHC 4.0 v6 dual inlet single outlet.
I have recently just purchased the flowmaster 50 series for my explorer simply because thats the only one that will fit with some exceptional modifications. I wanted to purchase the 40 series but there was nothing that could fit my truck......Does any1 have any suggestions?
And also I am looking for a tailpipe that is 2.5" in diameter for a 97 explorer I am open to any suggestions thanks.

I'm not real sure what you're chasing but check out the EF vendors first, then check Ebay motor's and to get a ballpark sound of what you're looking at purchasing check out youtube. Hope this help's.

well I already have the 50 series flowmaster. I want a 40 series but none fit my truck. Now what I am looking for is a 2.5" tailpipe that will fit my 97 explorer. But all the ones I am finding are around $170 and I did not even spend that on the muffler its self !

I'd go down to your local muffler shop and get a quote from them to run 2 1/2" from your muffler to where you want it to end or if you're running the stock 2 1/4" from your new muffler and just need a tip, same deal, ask them for a quote and see what they say.

It may also be worth checking out a catback system that will suite your new muffler and motor.

okay thanks will do but if you or any1 has a link of where i can get a 2.5" tailpipe that would be great !

i went full custom with mine, custom y pipe off manifolds to 3 inch pipe, 3 in dual 2 1/4 out 40 series flowmaster, i think it sounds great at idle, but its a little too much at wide open throttle. there is a link to a youtube clip on my registry.

I asked for a flowmaster muffler for my '91 for christmas and ended up getting an off brand called flowMONSTER. I was skeptical but I figured 'what the heck' and took it to a muffler shop for install. They installed it for $35 and at first there was virtually no change from stock. But after about a week of driving it started to open up. Now it sounds great. Get a nice, loud(ish) growl at startup and you can hear it while driving, but it's not just an annoying drone. I asked how much they paid for it later because my buddy wanted to get one if they were cheap, and they said that Oreilly ordered it for them for $45. The muffler was well built too...

i put a thrush turbo muffler onto my 94. it sounds great with bit of that low grumble you want and it was 1/3 the price of the flow master 40. also theres another thrush glass pack thats not street legal where i live because its almost just a peice of pipe(look in one end and see out the other) and it gives about as much sound as you can expect to get out of the 4.0, and it only cost about 30$

If you buy just a muffler instead of a catback kit, you're usually stuck getting custom pipe work done at an exhaust shop, or having something fabricated out of pre-bent tubing since it's probably not the right size to work with prefab exhaust tubing.

Gibson does make a 2.5" exhaust for the Explorer, but there's no telling if their 2.5" mandrel rear pipe will line up with a Flowmaster since their muffler is a round cylindrical design. Most other rear pipes for the Explorer are 2.25".

If you want a Flowmaster on there, and don't want to pay a shop to do it, you are best off buying the Flowmaster kit for your ride. They DO make a Force II kit for the 1997, part #17363. It comes with a 50 series muffler, but you can easily put the same exact size 40 series muffler in it's place, or even use a 2.5" muffler with 2.25" adapters for better flow. Overall the kits are hard to beat for the price, they make it easy to install, and the mandrel bent tubing flows way better than crush bent muffler shop pipe.

Once you get it installed, if you like the 40 series sound and don't want the 50 series muffler that came with the kit, sell it off and get some money back.

You might also call Flowmaster and ask if the pipes and hardware are available seperately, but they will likely cost more than the kit.

Thanks you gave me excellent advice! I originally wanted to purchase a flowmaster 40 series because I loved the sound of it after watching multiple youtube videos. The only problem was apparently they do not make one for my 97 explorer which has 2.25 dual inlets and a 2.25 single outlet. I called flowmaster they said there was nothing in the 40 series to fit my vehicle. If you know of a 40 series that can fit my vehicle PLEASE let me know because I do not really want the 50 series. I just have a malfunction with my exhaust system so I decided to upgrade it.
