Exhaust tip: affect sound?

This may sound like a stupid question but can an exhaust tip in any way affect the sound of the exhaust? I have a 40 series flowmaster that i have had for about a month and it had a welded on 3" rolled tip on it. Couple days ago i decided i hated the tip and bought a 2 5/8" slash cut tip that screwed on not welded. Could this in any way efect the sound of the exhaust? Does the size of the tip or welding vs. screwed on make any difference? Maybe its because there was a tractor running nearby, but my exhaust seams quieter. May be its a psychological thing because everybody else says it sounds just as loud, and looks a lot cooler. Thanks for any help.

tips can effect sound... the style doesnt matter though..... size i s what will do it... it wont effect it too much though unless one was resonated tip and hte other was just normal........
