I want a chrome exhaust tip for my new X. What do you recommend? I'm new to all this stuff so I got a few questions...

1) If I have to have someone cut the pipe, can it be changed back to normal? i.e. getting a new pipe

2) Will it mess anything up?

3) Does a tip make the X rumble a little? (sound...) Or do I need a glass kit or something like that?

4) Would you get a tip with 2 holes? Or just one big one? When I was at Advance Auto Parts, I had someone hold up this one tip I was lookin at and it looked pretty good. For $23, hell I'd do it

Thanks!

A tip is just a tip so it won't change the sound. I wouldn't get one that splits into two. To change the sound you'll need a new exhaust. A tip can be added without the need to cut the pipe.

Thanks.

How much would a whole exhaust system that sounds fairly well (not too loud, not too soft) cost me?

At Advance Auto Parts they said the exhaust can go in about 2-3 inches into the tip, like this, the tip sticks out a lot from back, so they said I would need to chop some off...

Do you think a chrome tip would look nice?

I think chrome tips look pretty good, better than stock IMO. Ive got a chrome tip on my exhaust until i can save up some money and get a flowmaster dual exhaust setup :chug:

Me 2. I got a V8 too so it would be cool if other people can hear the sound of the big engine :) So I wanted something to rumble a tad, so I might get a whole new exhaust setup, but we'll see. A kit comes with a nice tip right?

I'm not sure if a kit comes with a nice tip, there are only a few available for Explorers, your better off buying the muffler you want and taking it to a local shop and having them weld the pipes and whatnot.

Can't any SUV tip work on an X? I found one at Advance Auto Parts that looked nice and was for SUVs.... Or are you talking about an exhaust kit?

SUV exhaust tips?

Exhaust tips are just put on the ends via set screws (or you can get them welded). If you look at them at the auto parts store, they will list a range of pipe sizes that they fit on. If you pipe size is in that range, it will fit. This isn't rocket science.

And no, an exhaust tip isn't going to make your exhaust sound any different.

I know, calm down man.

I'm here to get help, I'm new to this stuff bro!

ya i meant exhaust kits not tips, sry for any confusion philipb123

Any suggested exhaust tip producers? or does it make any difference?... :bounce:

Exhaust tips are all preference really. Just buy what you like.

I took a quick look at them. All generally the same.
Are those screws (1 or 2 on the pipe) really enough to hold one on to your regular pipe? That could be super embarassing if it decided to come off while driving! (dangerous too - especially to motorcyclists...)

I just got one installed, everything is cool, except he cut the exhaust pipe too much and now the tip is back farther then I wanted it, o well, looked better then the stock one...

Bates: Anway, the one I got has 3 clamps that you tighten with the screws. Doesn't seem like it's going anywhere :)

Could you just adjust it out a bit if there is just clamps holding it on?

Joker: Tighten them alot. :D

Those clamps and screws rust out quickly and could fall off in just a few months. Check it monthly if it has become loose or just get it welded up.

Be careful about tightening them too much. They're very week and could loose tread easily. Again, it comes back to just getting it welded up. If you have spent so much on this and obviously excited over this, it might be worth the extra $$$.

I have a Gibson side swept exhaust on mine. Completly bolt-on and took me less than a half hour to install with the help of one of my buddies. And it comes with a chrome tip. It's a nice setup, not too loud at idle but when you get on it sounds very nice...

Don't remember what I paid for it but I wanna say it was less then $200.

I might get one welded, but this one just looks better imo...
