When I turn the key off, the radio and other accessories stay powered for about ten minutes, or until a door is opened. I am referring to that as "exit power delay" in this post. As of this morning, this no longer occurs. When I turn the key off, accessory power is removed and the interior lights come on as if the door had been opened. I do not have any door or hatch ajar, and there are no notifications on the message center. Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

You might check the wires going to the drivers side door. Sinister posted a how to about this. I had 6 wires broken in there that fixed 4 problems i was having.

Hope this helps.
If i new how to put a link to his post i would but it was titled "How To:Fix the Door Ajar Problem"

I am not getting a door ajar message, though.

FYI, To include a repair web link to a post, just go to the repair page you want to post as a link in a new message to someone. Then, right click your mouse cursor over the web address in the address bar, and select "copy" from the drop down menu, which will copy and save that web address. When you go to type up a new message to someone and want to include the web address you copied, just right click your mouse in the message compose box you are typing in and select 'paste". The web link you copied will now be pasted in your new message/post. You can also save your favorite repair topic pages to your "favorites list" and refer back to them when needed. It's easy to do.

I agree that it is likely broken/damaged wire(s) in the boot between the body and the driver door. I was having similar issues when I first got my Ex and had no "door ajar" light. I have repaired 3 wires at different times. Having said that:

I had similar electrical issues with my '02 XLT. The dome lights would stay on until the battery saver feature turned them off, the accessory delay wasn't working, the driver side puddle light didn't work, the keypad on the door would set off the alarm when I pressed it, the door ajar light would flash and beep at highway speeds, the radio would shut off as soon as I turned the key off, the delayed accessories didn't work, etc. The alarm would beep twice when I armed it. Recently all 4 windows stopped working. Most recently the driver door lock actuator stopped working.

A lot of electrical issues can be traced back to broken/damaged wire(s) in the boot between the body and the driver's door. I found 3 broken wires and repaired them. The thin black ground wire was broken and after repairing it all was back to normal. When the windows stopped working, I repaired the thick black ground wire and the windows now work like a champ. I had to repair the pink/black wire to fix the driver door lock actuator.

Here is the thread for removing the door panel: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=303524

Here is a great thread for checking for broken/damaged wires, thanks to synyster for this awesome write-up: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=270081

Be sure to take your time when looking for broken/damaged wire(s). Check all the wires for breaks/damage. When you think you're done looking, look again, and again, and again. A bright flashlight can be very helpful.

Good luck with the fix and be sure to keep us posted. :D:thumbsup:

I've had the same issue as you and what BigRondo has with and without the door ajar light being on, spraying down the latches and hinges made all those issues go away.

It may be the headlight switch. I rolled the dimmer all the way down to the "off" detent, and the accessory power stayed on when I turned off and removed the key. We will see if some contact cleaner can resolve the issue, otherwise I will be sourcing a new switch.

Good point.

Could also be related to the door ajar switch.

Here is a great thread for checking/replacing the door ajar switch, thanks to borland for the awesome write-up: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249253

That is a great write up.

On a side note, before going through a complete replacement of the switch, you can spray WD40 into the door latch opening on each door, as these become stuck sometimes....and this can alleviate the issue.

This worked for me, after going for more than a year of the "door ajar" light coming on occasionally...mainly after a car wash, high humidity, or rain....making me unable to lock/arm the vehicle from the door keypad and keeping the dome lights on. Worth a try....it worked for me

Hey McMadMac

Wondering if you had a chance to work on your ex and if you did, are you fixed?

Did you check the wiring in the boot? I recommend doing this before you start replacing the switches. Like I said in an earlier post, I had symptoms with no door ajar light on.

Hope you can get it sorted.

what i was inferring was did you check the wires in the boot or do a test on/replace a switch somewhere im not trying to rush you.

Good luck Finding the problem
