Anybody had this happen to them? 1st gen 92 explorer, when I turn the key to turn the car off, the car stays running, the guages still read for about 3-5 sec., then the car dies. I can take the key completely out of the ignition, and the car will still run for a little, then shut off. The ignition cylinder and key are new, but I had this problem before I replaced that. I'll take any suggestions. Thanks

your truck is "dieseling" Give the truck a tune up & stuff and see what happens..

DUDE! Mine does the exact same thing! All tuned up, no codes, no check engine light. I started doing it about month ago.

Don't know what a tune up would do. It seems like a bad ignition switch. "Dieseling" is what some older cars did. They would run after the key was out, but it would be an irregular "chugging" until it sputtered and dies. My X does not do that.

I was going to replace the ignition cylinder, but now I wont do that. Can't wait for a response to this one.

Sorry I cant offer a solution, but at least I can relate.

blee is right. Your engine is "dieseling". Before dropping some $$$ on new plugs, wires, etc, try a can of seafoam. that stuff works wonders and *MIGHT* help without you having to spend a lot of dough(a can is about $6 and you can get it at napa)

Yea thats all true for carbed cars, but in his case, what electricity is opening the injectors????

Or if anyone notices the vehicle doing this, just tell them its your "turbo timer"...lol

I can guarantee it's not dieseling, I know what that sounds like, and it doesn't sputter for a while then die, it runs like it always does, then shuts off as if I took the key out normally. My explorer is tuned properly, doesn't spit CEL codes or anything else. Thanks for the suggestions though. I guess since I don't want to start tracing electrical lines and I already replaced the ignition cylinder, the ignition switch will be next. J. Kennedy, I'll let you know if it helps.

have you made any elecrical mods? Radio, foglites? Anything that would tap into the fuse box / relay center? I'm thinking it is a grounding issue.

I have a similar problem, but I think mine might be in the ignition cylinder. Some times I can remove my key without my vehicle turning off, but mine does not die. It will keep running. There are other times when I can start my vehicle without a key. Also I have an alarm/starter piece with the stop and go function, where you are supposed to be able to press a button, then remove your keys and the vehicle stays running. Sometimes this works, but other times the vehicle stays running, but the starter engages while the engine is still running.

CdnCory, that sounds like a different problem, most likely ign lock cylinder. But come to think of it, I think J. Kennedy has my answer. I installed an electric fan a little while back, and I don't think I had this problem until then. I also have aftermarket guages, but those have been in there for a long time before this started happening. Too bad I lost my wiring diagram, I guess I'll have to redo it from scratch. I'll post back and let you know how it goes.

Just wanted to let those who wanted to know, I rewired the fan the 'proper' way, and no more problems. Just goes to show what bad wiring can mess up
