- 2004 Ford Explorer
Ok, so I am now learning that my 2004 Explorer 4x4 is prone to rear differential failure. I have 150k miles on the rig and it has been making noise for about a year. Now it is getting too loud to ignore. I am considering rebuilding the unit, replacing it if the case has damage once I open it, or simply trading it in for something newer. My uncle suggested swapping out the entire rear axle assembly with a newer models that isn't having the same failure issues. If I understand it correctly, the 2002-2004's were the ones having problems due to the design of the case. I may be wrong. Can I simply swap my axle out with one from a 2005 to eliminate this problem in the future?
