I was checking up on the recalls and TSB's for my '93 XLT and it said they were recalling the struts that hold open the rear hatch. I guess they have already recalled the ones that hold the glass open but this recall is for the ones that hold the door open. It said they will inspect/replace the struts and reinforce them where they meet the body. It also said notification letters will be sent out next month (Jan. 2000).

Kyle,

I just found these under general recalls for the 93 Explorer (4WD)on the Alldata public databases.

95S21 SEP 95 Recall 95S21 Liftgate Hydraulic Cylinders

NHTSA95V16400 Structure: Hatchback
Hydraulic Cylinder 950822

Now I know I received a letter for the same thing on my 91 but Alldata makes no direct mention of it.

So are you saying that they plan another one for the hatchback glass itself?

Regards,
Barry

This is what I got from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Saftey Administration)
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 99V310001

Component: STRUCTURE:HATCHBACK SUPPORT ROD (ALSO 13640000)
Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
Mfg. Campaign #: 99S34
Year: 1993
Make: FORD TRUCK
Model: EXPLORER
Potential Number of Units Affected: 475000
Manufactured From: APR 1993 To: FEB 1995
Year of Recall: '99
Type of Report: Vehicle
Summary:

Vehicle Description: On certain sport utility vehicles, the hydraulic lift cylinder bracket welds could fracture.

With a broken bracket weld, there is a potential for the liftgate bracket to gradually bend inward allowing the lift cylinder ball stud to disengage, unexpectedly allowing the liftgate to fall from an open position.

Dealers will install liftgate reinforcement brackets. Depending upon the condition of the liftgate sheet metal in the area of the bracket, dealers may also install a larger reinforcement. Owner notification is expected to begin during January 2000. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
