Ok so I replaced the starter and cellunoid(sp?) and my car still does the same thing. It wont start at all. WHen you crank it it just makes a kind of scratching noise that is very nasty> I dont know what to do now. I dont want to apy to get it looked at. Any of you have any suggestions? to check? I need to drive my baby. Its a 94 Ford Explorer EB edition. with a 4.0L Thanks.

What was the problem prior to replacing the starter. Some have experienced cracked flex plates or damage to the ring gear - bad teeth or it may have cracked. The replacement starter may not have the correct depth of engagment. Unfortunantly, the starter must be removed to answer some of these questions. If it isn't obvious you may need to pay for that help.

The same thing happened to my old 92X. I thought it was the starter as well but that didn't fix the problem. Turns out the flex plate and ring gear were cracked.

^_^.

OK...Where is the flex plate and ring gear? and how much do you think it will cost to have it fixed??

Flex plate is basically the flywheel. Ring gear is the gear on the end of your starter.

To inspect the flywheel, you have to remove the starter.

To replace the flexplate, you need to separate the tranny and engine. I dont think you can replace them in an X through the starter hole.

On my rx7 the flywheel teeth bolted on and could be replaced fairly easily through the starter hole.
