Explorer Turn Signal Problem - PLEASE HELP.

My ford explorer is having blinker problems as the one listed. I took off the top cover of the steering column and there is a red and white wire hanging out. It appears that it should go into the wiring harness for the multi switch. The plastic clip is broken that holds it in. I am curious if this is my cause for no blinkers.

Hello. I registered on this site to say thank you for your help in repairing my turn signals. My front and rear right signals were not working and with your help I found the problem with the main wire harness under the steering wheel plastic. The blue and white wire had pulled out of the harness and the plastic clip that was supposed to hold the wire in was broken so I hot glued the wire into place and now it works great. Thanks again!

My Bro. has a '98 Eddie Bauer Explorer and we were on a weekend (NCAA Football Game) trip and the vehicle was perfectly fine on our trek through Illinois into Indiana, when we got to W. Lafayette (Purdue University) the flashers and turn signals no longer worked, everything else works.
We took it to a local Autozone after the 44-7 ASSwhoopin Nebraska submitted.
Anywho, we went to AutoZone and checked the fuse box and everything was okay, then we (guessed at the problem) and bought a Flasher Relay
which is located (around) below the steering wheel above accelerator pedal. ..
Still no signals or emergencies. No clicking noise or arrow displays on the cluster, just nothing.
My brother is not very mechanical or whatever, I am more than him but not much. He is gonna take it to a mechanic, drop it off and say find and fix if you can.
Readers, if there is some info you can submit to help us out here we'd greatly appreciate it. Driving from IN through IL back into MO was not fun w/o blinkers.
Thx Much..

Note: I am just now going through ALL the posts in this thread. I'm not trying to be a dick by re-asking a Question already asked and answered..
If you're reading this and the answer is already in the thread then thank you and just respond "in thread"...
Again, thanks guys..

Check fuse number ten and replace brake pressure switch on pedal. Now the signals and info center will work. After your done cursing the guy who designed the wiring and have a nice day

By the way, this is the multifunction switch we're talking about, right? Thanks...

Anyone know the part number for the pictured part? SW5577 that pops up for my X is not correct...top right pic & top right plug has the two extra prongs to the right just like in picture BUT the cross parts for auto stores are missing these two...My signals will not work at all and think its due to the two missing prongs right? I put my old one back in and i can get them to wrk

I had a problem with my left signal not working on 1998 ford explorer. I searched everything: bulbs, flasher, fuses, switch and found nothing.
Then, after asking Jesus, I looked again at my switch more closely. The problem was the wiring harness. Where the wires go into the plug that goes onto the multifunction switch. When I adjust the steering wheel up or down it stretches the wires and they eventually worked loose so that they popped out of the plug at the end of the harness. This is obviously a ford defect but C'est la vie

I hope I explained it properly. It was not the multifunction switch or the wire harness but the plug at the end of the wire harness where the little 1/8 inch connector slips into the plug. The tension on the wires when adjusting the steering wheel over time loosened the little wire clips and they just popped out of the plug. I am sure this is the problem with most of the entries on this topic.

Hope this helped someone. I really like this vehicle but almost chucked it over this problem.

O to fix it I plan to make sure all connectors are in properly and fill the back end of the plug with silicone. I am confident this will fix it. The, because I broke the clips that hold the plug on I will tie strap it together.

I have a problem with the turn signals on my 2002 Explorer. First both left and right signals stopped working. The parts store recommended replacing the multi function switch. I did. Nothing worked for the first few hours. Suddenly, both left and right turn signal worked.(The emergency flasher works fine.) A couple of days later, the left turn signal began flashing rapidly as if I had a burned out bulb. The front bulb was working. The rear bulb was not working. I replaced it. I still have the same problem. If I push down on the multi function switch without fully engaging it, the turn signal works. If it goes past the click, I have the rapid flashing of a burned out bulb.

I do not raise or lower the steering column.

Any ideas?

I had emergency flashers that worked fine but the left and right signals would just light up steady green on dash and relay would buzz when switch was used to indicate a turn. I checked the wiring on column and even a known good switch. Turned out to be relay. As was indicated above, the emergency flashers would go out when brakes were applied so I replaced the relay and all is well. Seems the relay is not just old relay technology it has solid state electronics inside.

I may have missed this but do u have a part number for the relay. Have intermittent buzz when using turn signal (usually when turning left for whatever reason).

Welcome to the site. Do the hazards still work? My first guess would be that maybe your multifunction switch(the whole turn signal stock is connected to some other stuff and warrants the fancy name) might have come unplugged in the steering column. If you remove the plastic cover around the column you could the connector. The multifunction switches commonly fail and are about $50-60 here. Usually they are problematic prior to going in my experience. It's also common for them to get unplugged when the steering wheel is put in the lowest position. I zip tied mine connector together to stop this from happening.

A+ information. My wife lowers the steering wheel every time she gets into the car.

Crawl underneath the steering wheel and look for the blue box on a clip and turn the hazards on. if you hear it clicking, jiggle the wires a little and then try the blinkers. if you dont hear a click or the jiggle the wire method doesnt work, you most likely will have to buy a new "multifunction switch" which is about 30-80$ at chain autostores. I was personally going to just go to a junkyard and rip one out of a wreck though.
