it's called the multifunction switch. it controls your headlamps/brights, turn signals, and hazards. replace it asap before you lose lighting control. you can find it on fordpartsnetwork.com, or at your local dealer if you need it asap. do a search here for "multifunction switch" and you will find some good info.

It could be a bad flasher unit as well, but I've also heard of the plug on the multifunction switch work its way loose once in a great while. I'd look for the obvious stuff and check for power heading into the switch before i look at removing it. Check the light blue and white with red wires for power with the key on, and check the light green wire for power with the brake pedal pushed. Check them all as close to the multifunction switch as you can.

i am byuing a ford explore and was wounder if it is epencise on gaz 4.6 and i payed for 1997 for 7200$ with 154 milleage thank to let me know

well, i bought and installed the switch and that didn't help a thing. do any of the relays/fuses under the hood in the fuse block have anything to do with it. any other ideas would be welcome. although i checked all the fuses, which one is actually the turn signal one/flashers? i dont have a manual to tell me. any and all help would be appreciated.

don't have a 97... just 96. The manual says "in steering column, below instrument panel". From the picture and looking at the vehicle, it appears that you have to remove the panel under the column to see it. Again on a 96. Anyways, it is a good chance that your problem lies with the turn / hazard flasher... but it might not be bad... just missing a connection (or two). There are two hots running to it, one all the time and one on ignition. There is one ground (a likely candidate). Two outputs, one for signal, one for hazard. Hopefully your 97 is similar or someone else provides you with more "97ish" info. wire wise (96ish), blk is grnd, r/w is hot all the time (note not w/r), and o/y is ignition hot. Hope it helps a bit

well, i went out and bought an electric flasher and put it in and it does this intermitent buzzing. what does that tell me if anything?

Did you check for power going into the switch like I mentioned above?

Lemme get back to work in the AM and take a peek at the schematics again....

poor connection maybe ??? either battery or grd. Did you get any kind of signalling happening or still nothing?

I assume that even with the flasher, there's still no signal or hazards?

Looking at the schematics....

Check the fuses in the interior fuse panel.
#21 (15A mini)
#22 (10A mini)

If those are good, pull the turn signal flasher out and check for power through the Orange/yellow wire (switched power) and red/white (hot).

If you've got power at the flasher, check for power coming out of the flasher and going up to the multifunction switch: LB and W/R

If you've got power to them with the key on, look at the W/LB wire coming out of the switch for the right turn signal and the LG/W wire for the left turn signal. If you've got power that far, it's not a switch problem, it's got an open connector somewhere between the steering column and the rear light harness. I suspect one of those two fuses is blown though.

ok, the fuses are ok, the electronic flasher i put in buzzes when inserted telling me its something else. i get no power at the switch from any of the points, but i got power for the wipers and high beams? possible that i got a bad switch from the parts joint?

My guess on the "buzz" is that the flasher is not happy with something either on the input or output. As indicated, maybe not a good grd or battery condition on the input side or a short condition / heavy load on the output side.... my guess. Try plugging in the flasher only and disconnect the multi switch (C217 connector on my 96 which only disconnects the signal not your lights and stuff - C210) and see if any thing changes in terms of the "buzz". Lastly, have you connected up to a trailer lately?

it still buzzes with the switch unhooked and i haven't hooked up to a trailer either. this sucks!

Well, if I read the wiring diagrams right ???, and the thing is buzzing when there is not switch connected to it.... it ain't the switch or anything thereafter.... cause I would think that in "normal mode", the switch is open... ie. no signals, no trouble flasher.... and the flasher should be "quiet". So with the old flasher in, it is quiet but doesn't work either right??? Interesting, perhaps you could measure the flasher itself out of the circuit and compare the two. The outputs of the flasher is a "pulse train" so I would think it should be relatively high. The inputs should also be high as they shouldn't present to much drain to the 12 v system. Still think on this>>> :-( sorry
