I can swear that I read a comment in one of the 5000 A4ld post that a company is making a kit to increase the O.D clutch/steel series from 3 to 4.. I think Opera House may have been involded in the post? Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Joe.. there is a company offerring the ability to add a plate to the direct drive clutch (http://www.altousa.com) not usre I have seen one to beef up the OD. You might try checking ALTO's website, and also aceomatic's website. Let us know if you find something to report!

Thanks for the quick post, it looks like you were right on the money. I will be calling them Monday.

Thanks

I was going to do this upgrade, but when they took apart my last tranny, that (direct drive clutches) was the only part I didn't hurt/wear out/break..

If you have to pick/choose your upgrades, you may want to do the other stuff first.

Opera House is correct.

Alto,s kit does low reverse and high pack, but I had to remove 3/8 of an inch from the overdrive pressure plate to get 2 more frictions and steels. Getting the hardened pressure plate cut ran me 50$ at a local machine shop. Make sure you mark the machined side so you can install it with the hardened side toward the first friction. Good luck.

Unfortunately, cutting down the pressure plate for the O.D. clutch in the 94 A4ld won't be possible. The pressure plate only measures 0.2" thick, I would have to cut 0.118" to allow an extra plate/steel and maintain my .055 gap tolerance. I don't want to cut it down by over 50%. The good new is I ordered the Power Pack from Macko and should have it in 4 days. Thanks for the help!!!

Power pack the last time I checked

does not include overdrive. I removed my previouse post after sticking my foot in my mouth. I removed .060 from pressure plate and .2 from piston and used the thinnest selective snap ring. Sorry for the miss info. Its been a while since it did mine.

Believe it or not 2 tenths is

alot of meat. 1/2 of that is still very capable of handling most of what the average X has to give.

The OD clutch doesn't do anything

If you drive around in OD all the time. Thats why it isn't worn. It is only used in Drive and manual 1&2. Usually this is only done to high/reverse and forward clutch. Between the retaining ring and steel plates you can get that 0.130 inch. Think it is a waste of effort though. My forward clutch only had five friction (instrad of 6 it was supposed to have) and an extra steel plate and it didn't have any problems. 0.045 more than the maximum clearance. Some rebuilds can be so bad!

I still toyed with the idea. I was thinking about having it surfaced 0.10, cutting it in half and then recessing the outer edge for the snap ring to ultimately aquire my clearence. Nobody was willing to chuck it up in a lathe because it was too hard. The reason why I wanted to beef up the O.D. drum to begin with was incase I ever end up pulling somebody out. I will be installing the "Power pack" which helps out, but in manual first, the o.d. drum is also engaged (not sure why if you know I would appreciate knowing). I just wanted to beef up the next link. Alto makes thinner frictions and steels that would allow me to get an extra one in, but I just don't know if its worth it.
