so after some research i decided to go with magnaflow (http://www.mf-performance.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=8627) as you can see i got the 2.25 dual in single out. kept stock piping and stock tip. i was so excited to get it on. i go to crank it..barly louder than stock. im so pissed. my bro has a damn glass pack and his sounds 10x better than mine. sure it has a differnet sound but no louder than stock. is there any way to fix this? make it louder? is there something i need to do different as far as pipes and everything goes? i really need help as i feel like i just wasted $140.

well if you say you kept the stock piping your probably left the stock resonator in the exhaust then. so it doesnt really matter what muffler you put on it will always be quiet. i put a glasspack(i know people hate them) on mine and ran new pipe and it sounds awesome in my opinion. the resonator is your porblem, it looks like a tin can in the exhaust near the rear axle.

yea its still there..so getting rid of this and welding on a new tip would make it louder??

A tip won't change the sound one iota. Purely cosmetic. Bigger pipes should make it louder. Losing the resonator may cause it to drone in the cabin, but it will definitely make it a bit louder.

Cats stop sound, resonators stop sound, a great muffler like a magnaflow stops sound... having a little V6 stops sound.

If you just want to make a bunch of noise, cut it all out and throw a glass pack underneath. gonna sound like a$$ but it'll be loud.

if you want your rig to sound like it has power... then start by putting a motor with power in...

so since my outlet is 2.25 would running a 2.50 tailpipe be louder?

also idk if this is stupid or not but i have a sawza, wud it be dumb to just cut the tailpipe off the end of the muffler to save some dough?

agian and im sorry if im being annoying with all the questions, i just am new at everying so i dont know much..

Tail pipe ain't gonna do squat to the sound...

i have a v8 and its not like i wanna make a bunch of noise. i just want it to be louder than stock, and right now its really not..just asking questions here.

Check.

I would lose the resonator, and after that, short of going to a different exhaust, that's probably it.

exhaust outlet location

Yes, that would be dumb unless you always plan to drive with the windows open. The exhaust outlet should prevent the exhaust from exiting under the body to avoid killing brain cells.

I think you have multiple cats. Get a second opinion, but I think you can remove the back cats because they have no sensors. My buddy ran straight pipe for a muffler on a camaro, but left in all the cats and factory pipe. Sounded good. The factory equipment muffled it to a nice moan.

Curious: why do you want a louder than stock exhaust?

You can check by unbolting the flange infront of the muffler drop it down and start it. I will be a little louder because you aren't using the res or tail pipe. But it will let you know if it it real loud or not.

The easiest solution would be to buy a different muffler. Yeah it sucks you didnt get the sound you were hoping for but once you start cutting and hacking you still might not be happy with the end result. You might be able to sell you muffler since its like new and put that money towards a glass pack which run pretty cheap. I think the flowmaster 40 series would have been a good option as well for more growl. That way you can keep your truck legal without having to cut out the cats. High flow cats would be another option but it wont be cheap. Switching to a cold air intake or an open air filter would also improve you trucks growl.

Tip size will usually affect the tone. Typically, larger the tip, deeper the tone.

x2. on my last exhaust set up i tried 3 different tips (one after the other)to help get the end result i wanted. ended up w/a 3"x12" S.S. tip. each tip did have it's own sound. they are not miracle workers though, just provided different tones.

I went to 2.5" from the cat(single) to the tail pipe. Running a Mag Flow with a Mag Flow 3" tip. No resonator.

Major difference in sound. Louder but not rice or obnoxious. Deeper tone and some crackle to it. Sounds best at mid to high rpms, and no drone with tip out the pass side behind the tire.

High flow Mag Flow cat is in the future.

Here is the only video I can find with a decent sound clip of the exhaust.

can you take a sound clip?

Give it some time to break in, I had a magnaflow and at first it was quiet, quiet as stock. Then within a few weeks it started breaking in and got louder and louder. Just give it time. The magnaflow style of muffler is usually very quiet at first but they do tend to get louder as you put some miles on it. My frontier has a cherrybomb vortex which is a chambered glass pack so to speak, and was extremely quiet at first. Then in a few hundred miles it broke in and got much louder. Sure, the stock tailpipe and resonator aren't going to help, but in a few days you will notice it getting louder, I can guarantee it.
