Hello fellow explorer owners.
I have a problem with my '96 factory CD changer and would be interested if anyone has any advice. While playing a CD from the 6 unit changer in the console, the speed suddenly starting increasing like it was in fast forward search. I tried a few other discs with same result. After resetting the unit by removing and reinstalling the fuse, I now get a message "Bad CD" on all CD's. Does anyone know if this is a failure mode and what the cause may be, or could it be something simple like a connection or lint in the unit?

Thanks.
Dave

I had similar problems with my changer a few years back. Except for the fast forward, mine just skipped a whole bunch. Car audio places didn't want to touch it, so I took it to a dealer. Besides the fact that the dealer sucked, it was the right thing to do. They ended up replacing most of the changer parts under warranty, no cost to me. Just make sure an audio guy is going to be there when you take it in, they split themselves between many dealers. Oh, and check that it works when you get it back, before you leave the lot. Good luck!

same problem here- ALL it does is skip and mine started to jam once in a while... I took it back to ford and told them to replace it... they told me nothing was wrong and they cleaned it and it works fine..... Well it did work better but now 9K miles down the road after warrenty is up all it does is skip again and is COMPLETELY jammed. I have been trying to get the cartrage out foe a week now and nothing- I called ford and I told them about it- and they said that since im 9k past they cant do anything.... so then i got a price for a new unit from ford- $613.00.... they can kiss you know what.... I am so feed up... I have an appointment tuesday morning... going in for a new aftermarket cd- head unit, new amp, new cd- changer.... im getting ride of the crappy JBL system...

good luck

I'm not surprise about the price quote since it is from a dealer.

Ours did something similar not too far back, it wouldnt play ANY cd's at all, and the cartridge wouldnt pop back up. Turns out a penny or nickel or some kind of coin got down in there and really messed it up. Well we got tired of not being able to listen to the cd player and didnt wanna spend a fortune on it so my dad screwed around with it for a while and fixed it, no problems since. He had to take the whole console apart and dismantle the changer to get it out, then put it all back together. One day I thought I really screwed it up because it was going everywhere when I wanted to go to the next track, but turns out I had the Shuffle button turned on ;)
