The fan is hitting the cowling when the belt is under strain....A/C, heater, in gear, etc... When I pull up on the cowling it stops, so I tightened the screws that mount it to the body. That doesn't work. I checked the fan to see if it wobbled, but I can't make it wiggle by hand. What should I check next? It really sounds like crap whenever I am at a stop light or drive through and I feel like I'm driving a beater. I feel like an idiot because I can't diagnose the problem. Please help.

Bad engine or body mounts would cause the same thing. I'd make sure the motor isn't moving too much under load, or that a body mount is rotted/worn out.

It does sound as if either the rear motor mounts or the tranny supports are allowing the motor to tilt, changing the orientation of the fan in the shroud.

agreed, same thing happened to me on the mustang. prop hood open, have friend look at engine as you stand on the brakes and gas it. don't stand in front of it, but off to the side. you should be able to visibly see the engine move.

i had a problem like that with my bronco ll when in low range and jumping on the gas hard the torque of the motor would try and roll over between the frame rails. i put a turnbuckle on the air conditioning bracket down to the frame. i left slack in it a wee bit and put a rubber bungie cord to stop the rattle. no more engine torque over problems. just axle wrap. 4.10 gears are fun.

I'm betting on a LF motor mount...
