Hi Everyone,
My first post here. My gf owns a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport at which the A/C has been acting up. Here's what's been going on:
1. Warm air blowing out
2. Inconsistent vent pressure (vents will not blow out any air unless it is set on "high", at which it will then blow out warm air)
I tried doing some manual intervention by adding in freon w/ a aerosol kit I purchased at Autozone (w/ pressure gauge) since I figured it needed a refill, however, I saw minimal improvement (in cooling) and it was short lasted as well.
We just took it into a auto mechanic (whom we've known for a few years) and here's what was done. I would appreciate any feedback to determine if we were dealt a fair deal:
Two types of testing:
1. pressure tests to determine vent pressure issues.
2. pressure test to identify any leaks
Testing cost = $150.00
Items replaced:
1. blower resistor motor
2. lower pressure switch
3. plug for blower resistor (was burned by technician, so they had to replace)
4. add freon
Part Costs & Labor = $300
Total Bill: ~$450.00 (inc tax) for tests, parts, labor.
He told me parts #1 & 2 are ~$30; I called AutoZone and found out that part #1 costs $15. They're currently still working on the car so I don't have the final bill yet, but this is a pretty good estimate as to what I'm going to have to pay.
I see that these parts are small, cheap, and electrical, and that there are no major parts replaced such as compressor, so I'm wondering if the bill is somewhat on the "high side" of things....? Had I needed other major A/C components, I would have likely been charged close to $600 - and that sounds high for a 1998 Explorer Sport.
Would appreciate any feedback or insight as to what I've listed so far, and perhaps if I get it back in enough time then maybe I can challenge the mechanic on the bill....?
Thanks!
Eli
