After a lengthy, drawn out repair/warranty job, my Explorer has new life in it in the form of a new, "Remanufactured" 4.0L V-6 engine from Ford. The old motor with the failed, rear timing chain needed replacing. The Ford Reman engine comes with ALL NEW internal engine block parts, new gaskets and seals, a new water pump, t-stat & housing, harmonic balancer, valve covers, oil and filter change and spark plugs etc. The coolant and AC evacuation/ re-charge fall under the engine removal and installation/labor charge. The old intake manifold, fuel injectors and air intake, alternator, starter, flywheel, AC compressor and power steering pump are re-used and bolted up to the new engine, as long as they are still in good condition and useable. Also, new studs are installed for the exhaust manifolds. I had a new, reman aftermarket "Starter" installed just as preventive maintenance, since it was cheaper and easier to do with the motor out of the vehicle. I also had the fuel filter changed, which came with a bottle Castle fuel injector cleaner added to the gas tank. The Reman engine also comes with a 3 year, unlimited mileage, parts and labor warranty. If anyone has any questions about the reman motor, just ask. What a difference between a new motor versus an older, nearly 100K motor.

Congrats on the new engine. How does one get warranty on an 8 year old 100K mile engine?

I went with a 52k Mustang motor out of an 07 for $800. No warranty but don't need one. You probably paid 3-$4000 for the engine to be swapped out? I paid $1500 for my 04 with the bad engine and she runs like a top. I hope your tranny holds up cause if that goes the $$ you sunk in the engine will be hard to swallow if you buy the Ford reman tranny?

I just read you had it done under warranty. I'm sure the warranty paid a good coin for that!

Congrats on the new engine. How does one get warranty on an 8 year old 100K mile engine?

Thanks and you can buy extended warranties almost everywhere for most vehicles these days, even ones with over a 100K on the engine. The lower the miles, the more coverage of problems a warranty will cover. I bought mine thru the dealership I bought my Explorer at, it cost me $1500 for a 3 year warranty. My Ex had just over 80K on it at the time. I also purchased a warranty on a Jeep Grand Cherokee I owned previously, bought the vehicle and warranty with the vehicle having 114K on it at the time of purchase. BTW, I get extended warranty offers in the mail quite often, usually from Ford. You can also purchase extended warranties at small and large dealerships, repair shops, including some tranny shops sell them as well.

The engine R&R labor charge, which included swapping over the old intake manifold/fuel injectors etc and bolt on engine components (Alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor and the evacuation and re-charge of the AC system, as well as coolant hoses etc) came to just over $1600. The reman motor cost just under $3200. With the new fluids, fuel filter change, fuel injector cleaner and a new serpentine belt the total bill + tax came to just over $5200. I also spent $94.00 on a reman starter after using a $40 off coupon from Advance Auto Parts and I dropped it off at the repair facility and they installed it at no extra charge since the labor for it was included in the engine R&R. I couldn't see installing the original 8 1/2 year old starter into a new motor. I saved money doing it now because from I what I have read in here, these starters are a PITA to change with the motor in the vehicle. I've looked at mine before and there isn't a lot of room under there to work and remove one. Probably would have been paying my mechanic to change it out, cause I'm too old to be laying on my back under a truck fighting a starter these days. The old starter looks pretty beat up and has some corrosion forming on it, so it was time to go anyhow. As far as the tranny, it was rebuilt 2 1/2 years ago (under the same warranty) and has been running and shifting fine since then. It has roughly 12,500 miles on it since it was rebuilt. I also had a pinion seal and both front stabilizer link bolts changed under this same warranty as well.
