I read most, but not all of the 5.0 exhaust thread... and i didnt' see anything like i've been thinking about so i though i'd ask.. That being said, I dont run with my spare tire under the back in the factory mount. So, i've been thinking about running a F-body style exhaust there. I have a 98 mountie, i was going to cut the stock muffler off and make a y pipe to bring it out to a 2.5", then into a cross mounted muffler under the back and dual exits. Pic of the "style" of setup im thinking of... Thoughts guys?

btw, i'm thinkin a flowmaster 40 series in there.. I can actaully get a whole setup for <$100 so i may just jump on it and play with the idea.

personally i think double exhaust tips on each side looks stupid.

a single tip on each side might look nice though, although for an SUV i usually like to go out the side, just because there is less likelihood of the exhaust fumes coming back into the passenger area.. then again, if you're '98 has really good seals and all around the back hatch and stuff (no wind noise at all) then maybe this wouldn't be a problem.

since you're running a v8, why not just do it right and run dual all the way? why ram it all into a single pipe, then split it back out into duals at the end?

I have yet to ever hear a camaro that sounded decent, in that respect run a real dual exhaust.

I agree with rhauf the duals are already pretty much there either run a dual in dual out, or an x-pipe and 2 single in single outs and keep it dual all the way.

Ditto, there's tons of space for any size mufflers under the truck. Run two mufflers and two tailpipes, bigger than stock.

I've heard plenty of great sounding f-bodys.

but I may just go with a dual in/out muffler in the end. But i'm not wanting it to loud because there are a few towns that i visit around here where the LEOs are major assholes about sound ordinance "yet the harleys can roar through all the time without a blink." So i MIGHT go ahead and try the setup out, besides.. If i dont keep it there are PLENTY of rusted out camaros around here that have owners with deep pockets and no brains that i could sell it to.

a dual exhaust system with 2.25" pipe and some "stock" mufflers would be very quiet, especially if you kept you're cats.. you could also run 2.25" pipe and some mild performance mufflers (thrush or something) and you'd probably get a pretty pleasing sound that isn't too loud.

i'm not a fan of "loud" exhaust.. but i do love a nice exhaust sound. and i think dual pipes offer a much more pleasing sound than single. my preference at least.

The larger the muffler total body size is, the quieter in general the exhaust will be. Two mufflers will be quieter than one, that's half the exhaust volume going through each muffler, so more sound is killed in each muffler.

I'm not a fan of "loud" exhaust either. Just a personal preference. I don't see why I would want it. I do like "performance" exhaust. If it's a complete system, engineered by a reputable manufacturer, and is dyno-tested for increase in HP & TRQ, then you actually gain more than "fix-it" tickets. Sometimes when you fab up your own collection of bolt together pipes & mufflers, you're actually robbing your engine of HP & TRQ. Check into exhaust kits first. You might even like the way some of them sound. Besides, do you want the high school girls at the bus stop to hear your exhaust pipes, or your thumping bass woofers?

A stock 302 Explorer sounds very good as is. I'd like something really not much louder at all, but which flows as much air as possible.

The larger the exhaust is, the more airflow can come through the engine. As I've posted many times before, understand that all engines are tuned for the existing restriction of the exhaust. If you reduce that a lot, then the engine will require more fuel to achieve the proper air/fuel ratio. That means it needs a new PCM tune, that's why not doing that results in the loss of power feel. If you don't retune it with a new big exhaust, expect losses, because it's then running too lean.

My explorer is far too loud with the rear cats removed and a dual in/dual out 2.25" muffler. It sounds cool, but not on long drives. When I redo it the emphasis is going to be on high flow and quiet. They usually don't go together, but I will find a happy medium.

Eric, you still have plenty of room for more pipes and another muffler. Just rework the pre-muffler pipes and add to it.
