So I converted all my interior lights to blue LED's a while ago but the temp and direction display with the green lens was bugging me, it was the only green left! I finally broke down and went and picked up a piece of blue acrylic, cut it to fit, polished the edges up, and mounted it in place. Now it match's up with everything and looks great day and night!

nice! i like the blue look much better than the green my mountie has

wow that came out a lot nicer than mine did good job

looks great

It came out better than I expected honestly. I would consider making more but there would have to be a lot of interest by others for me to commit to the process. If anyone can draw up the piece in CAD I can laser cut them for super cheap and they will look and fit even better. I hand cut this one cause I didn't want to mess with trying to get the dimensions right in AutoCAD.

Any chance u are still selling for this mod?

I want one asap smh

I thought that all 95-97 Explorers have blue displays. Evidently it's not at all for sure what color the displays will be in those. All 98-01's are green though.

You might find one of those with a blue display easier than modifying the old one. Brightness is another thing, I don't know what differences there are available using aftermarket LED's.

My 97 is green

It should be blue, so Ford must have done that midyear also. Hopefully not at the same time as the GT40P revision, which was before Spring. I didn't know that some 97's got the green display, I've been slowly collecting F6 and F7 parts.

Not sure what you'd consider midyear, but mine was built Dec 1996. I've never seen blue though. Maybe southern trucks didn't get blue?

Also, my truck has green paint and green leather. Maybe they were trying to match :D

I was under the impression that the display was blue before 1998, and green started then. Obviously not, I wish these mid year changes were documented in some way.

1997 was a year for a few changes to the Explorer, and then 1998 had tons of changes(all from the start), followed in 99 by the fuel system, air bag, ARC, and wiring changes. 1996 was fairly stable, I thought 1997 was too except for the 302 head and EGR change, plus the new SOHC 4.0. 99-01's should all be the same, this is for the 4dr of course. Ford did weird stuff in 2001 with the Sport and the new Sport Trac.

my 96 limited has nasty green

I want blue havc ,message display, n overhead do u no the part numbers for blue ones

Interesting, that's two people now who mention having the green display in 95-97's.

There are a lot of the different Explorer devices on eBay. If there really is a mixture of blue and green for 95-97 parts, it will be harder to be sure which you are looking at. I've bought most of my parts from eBay or a local yard or two here. So far everything with part numbers starting with F5, F6, or F7 have had blue displays in them.

Very soon though the used parts available will be in worse condition that what you already own, so changing the color yourself will become a better solution.

Do you have any of the blue displays I dont care bout the unit itself I just swap it with my own units ....or do u no how make it blue n more detail then blue plastic any info ...because putting blue plastic over green lettering is not turning it blue in my opinion especially not like the picture in the above.

Search here on the forum for the many other threads about changing the display colors. A lot of members have swapped the LED's behind the various devices, from blue to red etc. I think everything but the radio, compass cover, and the instrument panel are fairly easy to do yourself. I haven't swapped any LED's yet, I've been slowly looking for the components with blue displays. I don't have any extras yet, or I would offer you something.

My '96 with a build date of 06/96 has green, is it similar to the gauges though? I put White LEDs in my gauge cluster and got blue, turns out that the light coming off of the incandescent bulbs is slightly yellow, which makes it appear green.

My '98 (build date: 9/9/97) has a green display for the temp/directional overhead display. I don't mind the green, I just wish it was brighter. It's barely visible. I've tried the solder mod mentioned in another thread but to no avail. Darn thing is hardly readable.

That the balancing needed of the brightness. To see some of the displays well, the interior light adjustment has to be all the way to full. The dash seems to be brighter than everything else, so you end up dimming the adjustment for that.

The aftermarket #194 LED's people are installing are even brighter than the stock dash lights. I think those need to be slightly less bright, or you have to find brighter bulbs for the tons of little display items.
