I have looked everywhere but can't seem to find any info on the KKM or K&M FIPK's. I have read that K&M's drop in is good for 2-3 or 5-10 hp (various sources), but I was looking for a bit more than that. Where can I get info on the FIPK's and what they can do(worth the extra bread)? Also, where are these things sold? local, only on-line....any help? Thanks!
:exp:...and, yes I have read through the back posts....:redexp:

It is K&N, not K&M. If you are searching for K&M you won't find it. I just put on a K&N FIPK that I ordered from Performance Products at http://www.performanceproducts.com.

OK,...K&N.., my bad,...typo!
What I was really interested in was the hp #'s from each.
K&N drop in - drilled box
K&N FIPK - better than drop in?
KKM FIPK - same/better than K&N
I appreciate any help/advice given...

I am not sure what the HP ratings are for the K&N drop in with a drilled box, but I can tell you the two times I did it to two different Rangers, it was not enough to feel.

The K&N FIPK was rated for up to 15HP. I can definately feel the difference with mine on, so the 15HP is probably about right.

I have never seen the KKM so I can't comment on its performance. Some people have stated though that the KKM is not emmissions leagal, if that matters to you. It did to me here in Phoenix.

dont waste your time, they dont make a FIPK for a 91-94...i've emailed them and everything and the only thing they sale for the '91-94 is the regular replacement filter....just thought i'd burst your bubble!! lol

I have the KKM for the 94. Ya can feel it. Nice rumbly sound too. Its not legal though, so when it comes time to smog I have to put my box back in. :(

As did I. I failed the visual test. :( Thats in California though. I dont know elsewhere... If you passed in California that was because the guy wasnt doing his job. :) hehe.

I just installed a KKM Tru Rev Kit three tanks ago. I picked up 1.5 MPG. I spoke with someone on the phone at KKM and they said it is good for 5-7 HP. It took 25 minutes to install, and I did not have to make any major modifications. I have the 5 liter and K&N does not make the FIPK for that engine.

The only real difference between the K&N FIPK and the KKM Tru Rev Kit is the FIPK repalces the air intake pipe with a smooth plastic pipe instead of using the stock rubber air intake pipe like the KKM Kit. Both use a cone type filter.

There is a large price differential: KKM=$89.95, and the FIPK =$160-225 if I remember correctly.

I read an advertisement that said the FIPK was good for 25 HP on Jeep Cherokees, but nothing for Explorers. That just means that it had restricitve intakes to begin with.

In the past I used K&N airfilters on all my cars and motorcycles and noticed improvements immediately. Since they did not make it for the 5.0, I decided to go with KKM. I could feel the improvement right away, and I like the sound much better than stock.

FIPK for 00?

Hey,

Is there a FIPK for a 2000 sport yet? Called K&N and they say only a drop in filter is available. Something carb legal would be cool......

Unless they changed the airbox from my '97 to your 2000, I don't see why one from a '97 wouldn't work. I have the SOHC V6 in my Sport. My airfilter was about 12"x8" rectangular. The whole airbox comes out, and a large cone shaped filter goes in it's place. The brackets for my FIPK use two holes from the original airbox. Maybe they just haven't gotten around to updating their specifications yet. If you were talking to a sales person, they may not know. I ordered mine from Performance Products. The FIPK is not listed for the '98-2000 models. Maybe they changed them. If you send pictures of your airbox and mounting, I'll let you know if they look like mine did. It does include a CARB sticker to go under the hood for emissions.

that sucks they dont make a fipk for us 91-94! here in houston we have a visual test also, do you think if i could get my hands on a carb sticker and slap it on a kkm it would pass the visual test?

Maybe. The guy said if I had a sticker or something it would be okay.. HOWEVER.. the KKM bypasses some emmisions stuff. (Yes, I know the site says they dont) For those of us with EGR there is a sensor that plugged into the air box (thats what I think its for) that gets eliminated when the KKM is installed. I drilled holes in the rubber part of my KKM and installed the sensor though... I still dont think it would pass... Id like to try it and see if it would though. :) Not that I have gotten much of a response from K&N, but I wonder if it would be possible to persuade them to make a FIPK for early explorers. Or is there another company (perhaps smaller) that makes FIPK's? Just a thought. We have had other parts made for the early explorer by request (such as white face gauges and clear lenses..)

Maybe that is why K&N doesn't make a FIPK for the '91-'94s. My '97 didn't have any emission sensorss in my airbox, so my FIPK didn't either. Whatever sensor it was was probably relocated on mine. I would bet it is the the air charge temperature sensor though. It measures the temperature of the air entering the engine. On my '97 it is a few inches away from my MAS towards the throttle body. I can't think of any other sensor that would be used.

If there is any mention on your KKM of who manufacturers it, I doubt if a sticker will work. My sticker says "K&N Filtercharger Performance Injection Kit, CARB D-269-12, K&N Engineering, Inc., Riverside, CA".

does the FIPK replace just the airbox and filter or does it replace the enire intake tube? I know they dont make a FIPK for my year but it would be cool if there was a way to modify it to fit on early explorers

It only replaces the airbox. the intake tube remains, and the MAS stays pretty much in the same location.

Yeah thats the sensor I am talking about.. but I have it installed now.. I wonder if I would pass?!? Hmm. anyone know of what they acually look for on the visual? And the KKM has no logos on it at all.. It looks just like the K&N for the most part. So that sticker would work.... anyone have an extra sticker??! :)
