I decided to take the 92 exploder I just got out in the woods yesterday. I found a back road that realy didn't need four wheel drive and drove around 3 hours straight back into the woods. After we found a lake we turned around to head back and the damn motor quit. This was around 3pm with 2 feet of snow and -16C weather. My 10 year old son was with me. I screwed around trying to start it until the battery died. I wasn't dressed for a long hike back---just a coat and boots and by then we both were pretty cold--so I lit a fire to warm up before we started walking out. By dark my kid was crying from frozen toes and I was pretty scaed as I had major spine surgery years ago but still have very little stamina. After another fire we headed out again. After a few hours walking I couldn't go any farther, but off the road a bit was someones hunt camp---I had to break a window to get in; but i have no doubt it saved us. This morning we started out again and got to the highway just after one.
By the time we got back my wife was freaked and the cops were looking for us.
I measured how far back we were and we had to walk 22kms to the highway.
Lessons learned:
1--Tell the wife approximately where we are going.
2. Always have clothes ready for such a mishap.
3--Go with a friend with another vehicle--just in case.
4--Generally be prepared to hike out if necessary.
PS---It was the coil pack.

Boy you two are lucky:)

Your very lucky you survived and was able to find some shelter. Next time I highly recommend keeping maybe some form of communication with you. I plan on getting my 2 meter license for HAM radio in the near future due to the fact they can use repeaters and CB radio(s) and cell phones are some what limited especially in certain areas where reception is poor.

Yup--radio is a good idea---cellulars won't work out there. I learned a good lesson----I doubt we'd have froze---but keepin a fire going outside consumes a hell of a pile of wood.

Wow!! Hard lesson to learn but at least it was learned and now you will be prepared when you go wheeling the next time.

Glad y'all are ok.

Always carry clothes for a nighttime stay.
Always have company and a way to communicate with the outside.
Always carry water and provisions for a few days.

There was no way you could have prevented the breakdown, but for the future it always helps to be prepared.

Happy Holidays.

Wow!!! I'm very glad you two made it out. I've done something like that once but it was 3 am and we had to hike out to my buddies rig. Roughly 7 miles in 3 feet of snow and in the middle of the night.

Now when I wheel in the mountains I take pretty much everything I would if I was going camping for the weekend. I've never been stranded in the goonies since but I have been able to help alot of other wheelers with what I carry.

Be safe and have happy holidays!!!
