First Explorer, First Ford

Hey Hey excited to get wrenchin on my new to me 99 Explorer. so far only small seemingly common problems luckily. driver door, hood latch, dash dinking, etc. witch is awesome and it seems like a good truck!

i 'stole' it for $1,800 with 196xxx on the dash in the pouring rain haha. i was a little nervous because the price seemed really low and i didnt really get to have a good look at it but almost 2 thousand miles later still driving great with no major leaks and cold A/C.

dash dinking? YOu mean ding as in Chime?

In 1999 the Explorer was available with 3 engine options, the 4.0L OHV, the 4.0L SOHC and the 5.0L V8
I will assume you have the 4.0L Sohc?

It’s a 5-speed 4.0 OHV I’m pretty sure tho doesn’t that imply OHC? Is there a DOHC variant?

Also are side post batteries stock or has this been converted?

I don’t believe any group 65 battery, which is what should be in it, is side post. OHV motors use pushrods, the SOHC uses timing change.

You, luckily, have an OHV.

I thought so I like the top post much more but at least mine looks clean and well done and thanks for the insight on the OHV/SOHC.

Sweet I always knew I was lucky just been having trouble telling if it’s good or bad luck haha

I would like to fix the small stuff and switch out the differential to get the most out of the 2x4 set up after that just slap some Michelin’s on it and get on up haha.

Maybe more as time goes on and I get inspiration from you guys on here

It is very clean except there is some roof rust in the rain rails and from where the roof rack had seen use but I plan on using it to so no biggy.

I love the 5-speed I didn’t know they even came with em and it drives great very strong, solid truck
