So did my first oil change....

My 94 explorer is leaking oil from what to me looks like the top of the filter.

So I re-did the process thinking I made a small stupid mistake.

Drained the oil, took the filter off, cleaned the spot where the filter screws on, put the filter back on, put the drain back on.

Why is it leaking? Did I miss something between the filter and the engine? Would it leak if I did the filter too tight?

Thanks.

Check and see if the seal form the old filter didn't stick to where the filter mounts. I had that happen once, and boy what a mess! Are you putting a little bit of fresh oil on the seal of the new filter? And yes, over tightening can cause a leak, as hand tight is good enough for any filter.

Ditto on the old gasket. Said you cleaned the block sealing surface.
Got to be the wrong filter, over tightened or defective. Strange.
