How Do I Fix 4x4?

Hi I am returning to the board after a long time away (including physically) and have my Explorer back. Anyway, I ended up fixing most things but never got around to the 4x4.

I have a 93 Sport 2 door with push button 4x4 & Low Range. It has about 130,000 miles on it. When I push the button nothing happens, not even the light turning on. When it first stopped working the light would turn on but nothing was happening - no 4x4 engaging. I do hear a clicking coming from the back. I do know how to check the control board coming from the rear, and check to see if the hubs are locking. Beyond that, how does one fix/clean the 4x4 if the hubs are not locking or if it is just the control board not working? Is there a fuse somewhere that needs changing if that is all it is? I'd be much obliged for help from any gents or ladies.

do a search for 4x4 not working, and you will find a very detailed report on how to repair and totally rebuild the electric motor for your tcase. I have replaced one and repaired about 3 times. Pretty easy to do.

Dead Link Removed

Check out that site. I had this problem last year. I went to a junkyard and paid $13 for a "new" one and swapped it in. Fixed up my old one, so now I have two... its pretty easy to do...

I just swapped out all the auto 4x4 stuff to manual 4x4 so if you need any parts just PM me I've got it all sitting in my garage.

Jack,

How hard was it to swap over to a manual tcase? I would really love to do that.

It was easy, just went to salvage yard and picked up the t-case shifter and t-case out of a ranger. I pulled out the electric t-case took only 30 minutes. mounted shifter to tranny and cut hole in tranny hump. the whole process took less than 3 hrs.

Is there anything special you have to do to take off a Tcase and put in on?
