First off I know I could solve the problem by going to a dealer, but if anyone knows why this is happening, it would save a lot of trouble.

For the past few months I've noticed that the 4x4 and 4x4 low light flash 6 times over a period of about 12 seconds. Then they stop for another 1:48. Then back to flashing. So it's about a 2 minute cycle. I haven't noticed any "problems" but it is a major pain and Id rather solve the problem than take the bulbs out. I have a 99 V-6, XLT and the 4x4 seems to be working fine.

If you look at the thread "if you switch looks like this AUTO/4X4/LOW" it might give you more information.

Many people are disconnecting their 4WD system to gain 2WD. If you do this then the GEM finds a fault in the system and flashes the lights. The fuse is hooked up with the PWR windows and interior light. Check that if you haven't, then double check to ensure that your 4WD system is working. If yours is setup like the '97 then you will still have low, but only with 2 wheels.

I HAD THIS HAPPEN A FEW MONTHS AGO

WAS STILL UNDER WARANTY THACK GOD! It's a problem in the transfer case. mine got stuck in 4 wheel by inself never even turned the knob! they found it was full of water and was self destructing. ford replased the whole thing! it was like 1500 bucks for the case i think. I only paid my 100 dectable.

I had the same thing happen the day I got my Ex. It wasn't supposed to be under warranty but since it happened the day I bought it they covered it. On mine the 4wd didn't engage, but it turned out just to be a relay. If your 4wd is engaging than I don't think it's a major problem. Something electrical would be my buess.
