Hello everyone,
This is my first post but I have sourced this site before. I have a 4x4 95 explorer XLT with a 4.0L V6. I have owned it for about 6 months and have not done anything to the transmission (aside from checking the fluid, my haynes manual states that it is a 4r55e). The fluid is nice and clear and in the 'crosshatched range.' today the o/d light started flashing and it has a hard time shifting from 1-2 (revs to 3000 for a 5 sec or so before shifting). I have done some poking around the forums and ran into somethings such as tightening the bands and replacing the solenoids. A few weeks ago while checking the obd I codes KEOR i got code 632 (along with 332 egr). the transmission seemed fine so we disregarded it at the time and focused on the EGR. anyways so I guess I am looking for some direction here. Most of the work I have done with my dad has been on trannies that were not electronic and/or manuals.

any help is appreciated
Cheers

sorry, I think that I was not totally clear on that. I actually haven't fixed the EGR yet. It runs all right and the check engine light comes on after driving for a while, (also I am a university student and take the bus so I hardly use the truck right now and also have limited time;)) and it starts to run rough, totally random missing. Also of interest, the tranny shifts fine between all gears except going up from 1 to 2. down from 2 to 1 seems fine currently. It will only shift if I ease off the throttle (even ever so slightly) after it reaches 3000rpm (between 1 and 2. thus climbing hills is a problem. I have now parked and will be spending this weekend fixing it. Could the EGR really have something to do with the transmission? thanks for the quick reply

cheers

also of a minor note i think that it just has a pfe sensor (haynes says anyway) if that makes a difference

any ideas from anyone?

I am gonna get to work on my transmission today (as well as the EGR), just wondering if anyone was has any ideas as to what might be wrong (see below for descrption) with it. A few mechanic acquaintances have suggested that I put the rear end on blocks and goose it in reverse. has anyone heard of that before?
looking forward to any reply

thanks

thought we had it fixed

hello everyone,
so yesterday we worked on the truck and it turns out I was missing second gear alltogether. We checked the bands and to my delight it tightened (ie no broken band) it went in 3.5 turns and we backed it out the required 2.5, unplugged the battery to get rid of the codes and it worked! :) ... but alas allwas not well in XLT land. next we lent some time to the EGR, tried switching the control module and went fro a drive, CE light came on after about 20mins. took the actual valve out, aprayed some product in there and was able to move it around, hooked it up to a vacuum line on a another car and it opened (ie the diaphragm is ok). put the old module back on hooked the battery up again.
drove for five minutes on my way home, CE came on 20 mins later while climbing a hill the O/D light started flashing again and the shifting issue returned  :thumbdwn:  :thumbdwn: also CE was on so I checked the codes and pulled 332 (EGR) and 646... not in haynes manual... ideas? so I unplugged the battery again for a while and both lights went away, it seems to shift ok but not perfect, I am thinking it is a solenoid issue. basically I am having trouble finding out how to replace the solenoid.
please help...

Do the band adjustment over again. Here is the procedure from the chart:
4R44E/4R55E 5R44E/5R55E:
Single wrap bands.
Overdrive band = 2.0 turns back.
Intermediate band (1995-1998) = 2.5 turns back. All other years 2.0 turns back.

pan dropped and...

Bands are ok, so i dropped the pan as I suspect that it is a solenoid issue. when the pan came down the filter was laying in the pan (ie not attached to the valve body. which is concerning as I don't know how long it has not been attached and I wonder if it has resulted in damage to the VB. However the oil seems relatively clean and there is a magnet in the pan that has some filings on it but nothing to be too concerned about.
another source wondered if perhaps the VB was having trouble getting oil which is why the problem arose this time when I was climbing a (actually quite steep) hill. ie the oil had flowed to the back of the pan and actually resulted in a gap between intake and oil causing shifting problems. ever hear of something like this? I am not putting a lot of stock in it and will probably replace the shift solenoid ( iwas receiving code 646 which I now know is second gear failure or something along those lines).
anyways I have bought a new filter, gasket and 5qt merconV, and I am trying to find the best place to get the solenoids (I am in Canada so all of the nice online tranny company's dont ship to me). ideas...?
also I have seen a few people recommending replacement of the EPC at the same time. I am not going to do it if it is the expensive one but it is green I pulled it to check. there seems to be a lot of confusion over this issue. for my tranny (4r55e) i believe that it should be the cheaper one (the supposed 'red EPC') what do you think?

thanks again

The green band EPC is more expensive than the red band EPC. WWW.800700Tran.Com has these solenoids for the lowest price. As for the filter, the filter acts as the lower half of the sump, so if it cuts out on an incline, it's because the fluid isn't going through the filter.

do the 5r55e VB and separator plate fit the 4r55e tranny?
800700tran.com has good prices on this stuff but nothing for the 4r.
BTW I tried another (used) solenoid and nothing changed. Could it be a servo problem?
thanks in advance
