Flex Pipe Mesh

2017 Sport. Anybody know the purpose of the wire mesh surrounding the flex pipe? This connects from the downpipe to the rest of the exhaust.

The mesh on mine detached at one end and I hear an annoying rattle. I put a couple hose clamps around it but I'd rather just cut it off it isn't really needed.

It’s probably to stiffen up the accordion joint.

....... or it might act as a heat sink to help dissipate the heat that builds up.
