I came home the other night to see my 98 Explorer in the driveway and the 3rd brake light was flickering on - nonstop, but keys were out of ignition.
It was happening all the time.

Then, my wife noticed that the locks wern't automatically locking when she put it in drive - like it always used to do. Instead, they would lock when she put here right turn signal on a few minutes later.

I'm thinking the worst - bad ground, short, something very bad.

Turns out both lower brake lights were out.
I replaced 2 bulbs for less than 5 bucks in 5 minutes.

Everything is now back to normal.
gotta love the 5 minute 5 dollar fix.

what year explorer do you have? If it is a 1993, I never knew the pwr door locks latched when put in drive?

Its a 98 XLT with V8.
Sold the 93 last year.

JS427,
Congrats on your fix. Why don't you change your vehicle data in your profile to say "98 XLT V8", it still says 93 XLT. That's what threw the other member off.
