I want to put in an aftermarket muffler but dont want it to be too noticable except when i hit the gas so would the 50 delta or 50 suv not be the way to go. i also would like to get some power but not lose any torque in the process so i figured just run 2.5 inch pipe out the back. i have a friend that has a 93 mustang with the 5.0 but he has duals would a 50 series sound close to that idling or still not as loud. any help would be good i know there are alot of previous posts but i cant find any really comparing it like this . major

Major,

I just had a 50 series delta flow suv dual in, dual out muffler installed on my '97 SOHC. Sounds great at idle, kinda like a stock mustang. It sounds real clean too, not like you need a new muffler or something. It's throaty, but not too loud. The thing is though, IMO, the higher the RPM's, the quieter it gets.

Last week I had a shop put on duals with two dynomax turbo mufflers. It sounds like absolute sh*t. I couldn't even tell I had a performance muffler on except that in real low RPM's it sound like I had small leaks everywhere (which I actually did because the shop did a terrible job).

Bottom line, I was real picky in what I was looking for, but I am completely satisfied with this muffler. Also, I think the two mufflers you are describing are the same thing...

flowmaster

what do you think is better? 50 series delta flow or non-delta? i ordered the non-delta... hope i didnt do the wrong thing. i want it to be a little noticable at idle and noticeable when i hit the gas. I have the V6 SOHC so it wont be quite as loud as the V8. let me know what you think. thanks
almost forgot to mention... i am going to get the dual in / dual out.

I have the 50 series. It sounds sweet at startup. At idle, it is a little louder than stock, but not much. At WOT, it sounds strong. I would compare it to a stock mustang or something of the sort. I love the setup.

I was seriously thinking of a 40 Delta-flow Flowmaster, or a Dynomax Super-Turbo... I believe the 40 is slightly quieter than the 50 series, is this correct. I also have the SOHC V6 and wanted some performance gain and some MPG gain. I am not convinced however on the Gibson side-swept line... I do not want an exhaust out the back ( I think it looks cheesy on an ST; that is a sport trac)... I've thought about a 40 or 50 series with turn-downs right after the mufffler instead of running it out the back. That way you get a stronger sound with with the reverb off of the pavement as long as you can stand the vibrations inside the truck.

40 vs. 50

the 50 series is quieter, however they are just about equal in performance.

i am pretty sure you are backwards on the 40 and 50 deal. the highter the number the lower the sound level. wouldnt just putting a turndown after the mufgfler look kind of bad in the winter because it would look like all kinds of smoke coming from the underside of your car. just a thought. but if i put a turndown at the rear of my explorer would it help with torque like it does on a diesel engine?

becker69,

Don't get the Dynomax Super Turbo, it's way too quiet on a V6.

Major, I had the same exhaust criteria you are looking for. I went with the SUV-50, dual-in, single-out with a side-exit stainless Dynomax tailpipe. I couldn't be happier with the sound or performance of it. It is slightly louder in the 2300-2800 RPM range, but nothing that is unbearable. Unless you demand rear exit tips, a few shops I talked to are suggesting the side exit, because there is less of a chance of the exhaust gettting sucked back in to the passenger compartment by the air turbulence behind the truck.

that sounds good but did you just give dynamax a call and buy the pipe or is it just a tip you are talking about.

i just bought a force II cat-back which uses a 50 series delta-flow muffler. it isnt much louder than stock at idle.

It's the whole pipe from the muffler back, with the stainless tip. The exhaust shop I went to had a couple on hand already, and he gave me a deal on it.

I have 2 two-chamber Flowmaster American Thunder mufflers and it has a great deep sound to it. With all the converters these things have, its still too quiet for me. Guess I'm used to my Mustang which has no converters.
