I want to flush my automatic tranny out and refil with full synthetic transmission fluid. I have a aux B&M oil filter and cooler. About how many quarts would I need to fully flush out and get my tranny refilled?

Holy Jesus thats going to be expensive. I bought a gallon of red line synthetic tranny fluid and it was 30$ Did you do it yourself or get a shop to?

So let me get this right

I take the line off my Auxillery tranny cooler that "GOES TO THE TRANNY" and put it in a bucket. I then drain it 1 quart at a time (then refil with fresh 1 quart) until the fluid looks clean OR i replace 15 quarts? How much does this usually run you when you do it?

Did the tranny flush today...was a PITA....lol
made some booboos in my first attemp. I used two 5 gallon buckets. I put a threaded barbeded fitting in one as close to the bottom as possible. I bought 10 feet of 3/8 id clear hose. I wanted to be able to see the fluid as easy as possible.
1) first attempt. I had the output side of my tranny line into the catch bucket. I had a double barbed fitting from the clear hose from the fill bucket go to the external filter then cooler then to return tranny line. DIDNT WORK. The tranny pumped out fluid fine ( dark brown).
I thought that fluid would be pulled in from the fill bucket with the help of gravity since I had it sitting up in engine bay. It didnt flow as i wanted.
2) I connected my clear fill line directly to the tranny return line and bypassed my external filter and tranny cooler.( I shoulda had it exit into the fill bucket from the tranny cooler and external filter, but I forgot. I was also getting messy disconnecting things so I rushed to make it happen with no hassle) I connnected in between the fill bucket and fill clear line a fluid hand pump to suck out fluid from bucket and push into tranny fill line.
I started truck and had tranny pump out the old nasty fluid, then stop and pump new one in. I did about 2 quarts at a time. I ran 15 quarts into truck. For the last quart. I re-attached the tranny exit line and connected it back to the external filter.I then pumped in the last quart and reconnected the exit of the tranny cooler to the tranny in line.
I will run it tomorrow on some flat ground and then pull the inspection plug and make sure I have correct fill. The fluid is not as red as the new fluid. But was no longer dark brown or even brown at all. It was more of a dull red than bright outta the bottle red. I think I am going to do this flush one more time in a few months and I should be good.

Question: My old fluid was Dark brown. Is that a signal of something very wrong?

Its funny this is supposed to be a 100k tranny with no dipstick..LOL. SURE!!!!

I will post my results after a week of driving and see if my sluggish shift has left.
I should of planned better , but all of this was done on Queens street. So room limited with the speeding cars flying past me. One guy almost crashed ito the back of my truck as he pulled it a spot behind me. Then the dark came and it was flashlight time. DAMN! I need a house down south where its nice and a big garage.

GEEZ it sounds like you had fun lol. Where did you get the clear tubing at?

Also, once I pump the old fluid out...where do I pour in new fluid? Do I pour it in the transmission dipstick deal under the hood?

I put a funnel in the tranny dipstick tube and pour it in one quart as one is pumped out.

Ahh I get it now.

Also, if I was just to drop the pan and change out the filter, about how much fluid is that? 1 gallon?

LOL. Got the clear tubing from Home Depot for like 3 dollars. and the barbed fittings there too for little over a dollar each.

It was method that was wrong and my first time. Next time I am gonna exit from the tranny cooler to the bucket and fill into the tranny return line via pump. Wish this truck had a dipstick.

Next I am gonna put a nice long filter on my external tranny mount. I have it installed just behind my grill horizontally, I have plenty of room for a long filter. Gonna go with Baldwin, if their filters are good enough for Catipillar then its good enough for me..lol

why a bigger filter? I just use the same exact filter my explorer uses

More surface area to filter and less restriction becuase of it. Oh yeah 2 more quarts of fluid. Ahh..its overkill yes..lol.
At the least if i don't go long it will be a premium filter with sythetic media.

For my dual remote setup I am running a bosch full flow and Baldwin bypass filter.

Good luck

Your gonna drain aft of external filter and cooler. And for you...full it through dipstick. I think the first times are always somewhat messy. I got a plan, so next time its gonna be 1 2 3.

Your right shop rates are crazy...

Keep us posted...

Which line is it?

If you're looking at the trasmission cooler from the front of the truck, which line is it that will take fluid back to the transmission. ( The one that will release dirty fluid in a flush? )
