FMS 5.0L Crate Engine Choice

In the future, I plan to buy a FMS crate engine to replace my stock 5.0L in my 96 Explorer. We use our 96 Limited as a daily driver plus tow our small travel trailer.

As a result, I am interested in one of the 5.0 FMS engines that produce more practical, useable torque, between 2000-3000RPMs. I would like to use my stock intake manifold, newly purchased FMS ceramic headers and other bolt ons. What would be your recommendations for my application? Thanks!...Mike

well, since they all use either the E-cam or the B-cam, just make sure you get the one with the E303 cam. you will obviously want some exhaust upgrades. the stock X intake and 65mm throttle body should work fine with any of them. hp costs, so how fast can you afford to go?

James & Section: I was thinking about the milder 270 HP engine with the iron GT 40 heads or the 320 HP engine with the aluminum heads. Durability, longevity, and ability to pull is more important to me than going fast. Are iron heads more durable than aluminum heads? Believe there is a company in Weatherford, Tx .Soutwest Ford and Gene Evans Ford in Georgia, who I was going to contact... Might buy an engine and store it for later on... Mike

get a 331 stroker motor and bolt all the stock stuff right back on. you will have a blast. I only dream of doing this with my X V8.

Iron heads are tougher, and everything else equal, iron will produce more hp in the end. Alloy is light weight and easy to work with. The stroker idea is a great one! Might be cheaper also.

Dead Link Removed also has them. Go to their website and punch in the 2 following part #'s. FMS-M-6007-XB3 which is a 345 HP 5.0, or FMS-M6007B50 which is a 320 HP 5.0. Both motors come from Ford Racing and feature the B303 cam with GT-40 Heads and are long blocks. The 345HP motor goes for $3429.95 and the 320HP motor goes for $3195.00

Jeg's has the other one you'll want, part # 397-M-6007-XE3. It is the 345 hp version with the GT-40X aluminum heads, but with the E-303 cam that's better for the X. The FMS part # is M-6049-X303. They want $3339.99 for it. I thought about going this way, but I'm just going to rebuild a 5.0 with all the nice bits myself.

i posted the Texas list to possibly save you shipping. remember, an assembled long block is truck freight (big $$$). i would say find the closest one to you and get it from there. it should be the same price everywere.

Many thanks, James and the rest of you guys. Looks like the 320 hp with the E cam might be the best choice. Guess the E cam produces a lower torque range more suited for towing...(800-3000 rpms) If so, that is what I am after. Probably will go to Austin or Waco, since I live in Temple, halfway between the two cities. Mike

Please pardon an elementry question... but what, if any, precautions should be taken once I buy the new engine and store it for 1-2 years? Since it will be in a crate, dust would not be a problem...just concerned about possible internal lubrication deterioation.. Thanks..Mike
