Actually Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" prefer the hyphenated "know-it-all".But 01svtL's point holds water regardless, IMHO. I'm accustomed to speaking with professionals, people with post-graduate educations. Rarely do I encounter an engineer, lawyer or physician who is openly intolerant of lesser-educated people's language as long as it is respectful. Nor do they rant and rave themselves, unless they're going through a nervous breakdown.
