ford 4.0 trans failure? AA wants comments

ok i only read the the 1st page,

but just a comment


would a tranny out of a 94 Econoline or F-150
i'm guessin its the same tranny, i'm talking about the automatic, my parents had van that had a very reliable tranny, i don't know what it was, but it was big!
i'm guessin that it was like a c6 but it had overdrive
would a tranny like this fit into an Explorer? or would you have to make some major modifications because of its size,
the van that my parents had, had the 300 inline-six, and it could pull its own, and the tranny had a lot of pulling miles on it, and it shifted just fine before we sold it about year and half maybe 2 years ago, and from what i have heard, its still running great!

The original plan was a Ford AOD, which is probably the tranny that you had in the van, or some version of it. We tried that first, but the bell housing was too big to fit the Ex without major tranny tunnel mods. That is why the choice was made to go with a 60 degree 700-R4 case with the same internals that were found in the trannies behind the Chevy V-8's.

I hope that is not the same crap that that came out of the 2.8 liter Blazers. My mom had a Blazer and that transmissions is no better than the A4LD.

Yeah, it is the same trans as the Blazer. It may not be the stoutest trans out there but there is tons of aftermarket support, and they can be built up to be very strong. There really isn't much you can do to upgrade a a4ld.

Is an adapter necessary for the tranny cooler lines? Or do they use the same fittings? Do the cooler lines line up in near the appropriate place?

You will need to run new cooler lines. When they did mine, they used stainless flex tubing for ease of routing.

Just to let you guys know, If you have aftermarket headers you will need to grind out a lot of material from the bellhousing adapter, a chunk out of the bellhousing itself, and some on the exhaust flanges to even get the bellhousing adapter mounted to the engine. It looks like installing the rest of the exhaust will be a problem as well, I'll let you know when I get to it.

Mudd***** out of curiosity what kind of headers do you have. do you have a body lift.


does anyone know if there is a difference in headers for the explorer and the ranger off the same 4.0 ohv engine

He has Borla Headers and no Body lift.

Without a body lift you might have clearance problems if not running the 13-54 adaptors on the Transmission.

As far as compared to the ranger. I can not help.

Also, As far as the front adapter kit is concerned, I don't really see the point in including the GM part for the bellhousing dustcover. What's the point? The GM part is made to index a starter on the passenger side rather than the explorer's driver's side; the dust cover when installed comes up about a half an inch short of even contacting the bellhousing adapter, let alone leaving enough material so that you can tap into the adapter plate to fully bolt it on. The part is obviously not made for this application, and has to be modified to even be acceptable, such as in DWD's pic. Would it really be that hard to make one that would fit? I appreciate the fact that they made the adapter, but I thought I'd give some honest criticism anyway.

That would make the kit cost even more as it would be another part to fabricate. A little ingenuity will be in order to get the dust cove to look right and actually serve a purpose.

Actually, it would have cost less, because I could have used a flat piece of sheetmetal and gotten the same effect.

Good point. I still need to modify mine some more to provide more dust protection for the back side of the starter hole. I had a my starter die at t-haven and noticed it was pretty dirty in there. I am not sure, but I think that it may have caused some of the problem.
