If it's a 2000 it's Gen II. 1995-2001 is Gen II.

Take your VIN # and enter it into Ford's on-line ETIS database to find out more about your vehicle.

The forums are even broken up into the different generations and you found the right one.

As far as many enthusiasts are concerned, the Explorer died in 2010... so there are only 4 generations in reality. The 2011 onward models are glorified minivans that only borrow the Explorer name, as was said (not in those exact words) by one of the Ford Motor Co.'s big wigs back in the day, when they were trying to prove their "new & improved" (lol!) Explorer minivan could be as capable off road as a real truck, aka previous models. In the end it failed miserably, but Ford's answer was: "most people never go off road anyway, so whatever...".

I actually removed the "EXPLORER" name from my truck's rear gate in 2011, out of protest. I didn't want anyone getting confused and thinking I'm driving some FWD soccer mom mobile. I drove a 2013 "Explorer" at work (work vehicle) for years and it doesn't even come close to being a truck, not to mention the numerous problems with electronic crap and drivetrain components that it has (FWD-based unibody "truck" = bad idea!). Honestly, Ford should've called it the Edge II and be done with it, letting the Explorer model name die off gracefully.

If Ford said "Most people never go off road anyway" why does the Gen 5 come standard with more off road settings than any other Gen Explorer?
and If you didn't like the Gen 5, why did you buy one?
Sounds to me like your just an Angry Canadian.
Every law enforcement agency in the US has either purchased, or is planning on purchasing the Explorer to replace all of the fleet of squad cars, marked, unmarked and undercover.
Yeah, Fords going to let the Explorer die.
LOL

that is very true got stopped last night at safety top and there it was the brand new 2016 ford explorer. ask the officer how he liked it . his words were '' I love it beats the squad car handsdown lol

I don't consider the Gen 5 Explorer's "trucks" because their not body-on-frame and from what I'm hearing the 2WD's are FWD. Today most of the SUV manufacturers are going to uni-body construction, I guess because today's buyers want more comfort and more more technology in their vehicles. As far as I'm concerned the 2WD Gen 5 Expl is more of a minivan with an SUV body on it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not a truck. As far as saying most people don't go off-road, I believe that's true. To be generous I say that 75% of Explorer buyers never go off-road and the percentage is probably higher.

LOL, if I was mad and didn't like the 5th gen I bought, I wouldn't mention my 2nd gen truck that has the POS 4.0 SOHC in it. The drivetrain is more important than whether there is a frame or not.

I called the Dodge Durango a big ugly minivan from the day it came out. Now that's a minivan to pick on, that's no truck.

I like the newest Explorer. I have one police sergeant or upper level policeman on my route. He loves the Explorer compared to the Crown Vic. He'd been in the CV for ages, he was a K-9 officer until he got his promotion. So he lost the dog and got the new upgrade, the 3.5 TT Explorer.
