All, I got my hands on a 4.0 sohc with the ford reman tag on the left head out of a 2002. When I pulled the motor looking at the block it cant have more than 30,000 on it block has no rust at all on it and paint is still quite fresh hell the bolts ont he oil pan have zero rust on the heads. Question is should I do the chains or not before I put it in my 2000. I got the trans and transfere case as well so if anyone is interested will sell trans and case since I cant use them in mine. Trans has 127,000 on it.

Tough call, I believe I would just go ahead and install it.

Yea that is what I was thinking also.

Unless I was out of cash, I'd changing the guides and I would at least look at them.

If you didn't have to pull the motor (or trans) to get to the rear guide I would wait but since it is a lot of work to get there and the motor is already out.. Do it now and then not worry about it again..

If you pull off the cover and see that it is already using the new style guids and things look good, just button it back up..

That also makes sense. How do I determine if it has the new style guides? Never had timing covers off of one of these things.

That I can't answer.. I haven't had to look at them on our sohc v6 in the mustang.

I'd look at the threads that talk about installing the guides and see if they show the differences (besides not looking broken/old)

If it's a Ford rebuild put into a 2002 then it really has to have the updated parts. That's a pretty safe bet. It's not that big of a job to pull the engine back out again later if necessary -- since you obviously have the tools and skills to do that now. Normally I would change the parts, but in this case I'm going to say leave it alone and stuff it in there. Just be sure that if it ever does start to make noise that you get it out of there and fix it before it lets go.

I bet someone like streetrod could tell by pulling the valve cover.

But why mess with it...have you seen this engine run yet? I wouldn't put more money into it unless I see it running.

Oh yea I drove it 20 miles to the garage before yanking it! A freinds mother passed and he gave me the truck with no title and i gutted it and parted most of it out and scrapped the rest. He knew she had a motor put in it but did not know it was a Ford reman. He also told me that he was sure the motor was replaced no more than 2 years ago. I am going to drop that puppy in mine a little later this summer. Mine is running strong just has 230,000 going to put the reman in and rebuild mine. I got the trans out of the 02 as well.
