Ford Scalable Remote Start & Security Kit - 2014 Explorer Base

Hello everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I am looking into putting the OEM Ford remote start into my mothers 2014 Explorer Base for christmas. With that, I have been doing some research and have come up with I need the following two components to make this all work.

This is based on some conversations with a local ford dealer as well. Other than having the computer flashed and reprogrammed for this, is there anything else I would need to purchase?

Let me ask a question, especially if you have done this before. After you connect the hood switch wiring into the switch, where does the remaining wiring go and/or terminate? Now, from what I am finding is that buying say the 1000' kit might be more cost effective? The fobs are roughly $260 and then the switch and harness. I guess I have been seeing the bigger units for like $250 with buying the switch and harness. I am a little in the dark on this as typically we order vehicles with remote starts. We ended up with this explorer when our Bauers trans finally died.

I haven't done it as I've always just used the remote start on the fob. Perhaps Jason, jmr061 can help you with that.

Hi Peter,

I reached out to Jason. He confirmed it needs to connect up to the BCM. I guess the real question is now, where is the BCM exactly. I am quite positive its up behind the dash. I also suspect I would need to tap the applicable wires and connect in the switch harness.

The question I have is with regards to connecting the wiring to the BCM. I assume its a matter of removing the under dash trim panel to expose the BCM. With that, (keep in mind I don't actually know what the BCM looks like yet) will it be obvious to which part of the harness it belongs in? Does anyone have any photos of this?

I also just ordered the 4 button Fob/Key and a hood switch, and I'm planning to play with IDS to get the remote start activated.

Hello all,

Merry Christmas.

So I went to install the wiring harness today (I have the keys programmed and the truck enabled for remote start) but cannot for the life of me figure out how I am getting the lead wire into the cabin through the engine bay. Trying to go through the plastic main hardness housing was a no go and I do not see any other grommets on the driver side that I can go through.

For those of you who might have installed this harness, how did you get the BCM wire into the cab? I can do everything else, but this is mind boggling.

Part of me is now thinking I should go right beside the where the steering column penetrates the firewall and put the smallest grommet I can get in there and just silicon up the hole. It would seem the other way to do this would be to pull the wiper arms, cowl, the cowl extensions and potentially the strut stabilizer bar to gain access to the secondary firewall. I guess my only question with that then, are there clips to be concerned with on the cowl that I cannot see?

I haven't heard of a base model not having the harness installed from the factory for the hood switch, mine was plugged into the dummy connector where the switch was supposed to be

Yeah, this explorer certainly does not have the harness. I was kind of hoping the truck had it, but the pin is not in the BCM for it.

I've decided that instead of trying to fight with going through the double firewall up top, I am going to drill a small hole and install a grommet near the steering shaft and run it in the cabin. I'll put some small wireloom around the 16 gauge wire and then silicon the opening up once I have the wiring in the truck and spliced to the BCM pigtail. I can also then use this hole for a future brake controller.
