Forward Sensing System Alert

2017 FORD EXPLORER

My vehicle is equipped with the forward sensing system. It works well, but when I pull behind a Ford or Lincoln at a stop light the alert tone sounds . Anywhere from four to six feet behind the vehicle. When pulling up behind other vehicles, nothing. Is this a "normal" Ford thing? It's strange and annoying.

Any help is appreciated.

I can't say I've experienced this on mine, but at times surrounding traffic will set off my proximity sensors (annoying) in stop/go or stopped traffic.

Is that what you are getting?

Peter

Wwhen approaching another Ford from behind that is equipped with sensors, it will mess with the front sensors and the warning will pop up along with the audible chime.
This happens to me frequenlty when approaching other Ford vehicles.

I know that others have posted that as well but I don't understand why it should happen. I would have thought that the reverse sensors would only be active when the vehicle is in reverse. Curious as to what is causing this. I haven't had my vehicle long enough to check and see if mine does it as well. I wonder if is the BLIS radar unit of the vehicle ahead that may be causing it? That unit is active all the time when driving.

I thought so too, but the warning comes on even when approaching the other Ford vehicle straight on.

I have not experienced this at all with my new 2017 Explorer. I do almost all city driving and frequently pull up behind other Fords. On occasion, I've had a few false positives, sometimes when taking a curb exit, and frequently when a car in front of me is turning left but mostly out of my way.

I had one wet fall morning that triggered a lot of false positives for me, but I figured it was just a leaf or something stuck to one of my sensors.

Are you referring to Collision Alert or the front sensing system. I've had the collision alert go off at times when coming up behind a car turning right but the only time the front sensing has come on is when I pull into the garage and get close to the wall.

Peter

Yeah, my bad. I mixed them up. The first part was the forward collision warning on curbs/left turners, but the second part with leaves was actually the front sensors.

I have definitely not experienced sensors being triggered by proximity to other fords.

Mine does this as well. If I am approaching a Ford or Lincoln from behind my parking sensors go off. Doesn't happen enough to be an issue, but I have noticed it.

Happened to me for the first time today, coming up behind an F150 at a red light. Not like it's the first time I've been behind another Ford with rear sensors. Even weirder, we were in the left turn lane, and once we started to move, my front right sensor was chirping even though turning left meant that the right side was further away from the other truck than the left side.

Hello Chris-74,

Have you or anyone on this thread brought this up to your Ford Dealers? If not, I recommend you bring it in and get it diagnosed first. With the diagnosis, your dealer can look up any TSBs, recalls, or customer satisfaction programs that may apply to your vehicle.

Also, please PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number. I’ll loop in the customer service manager for your area. You can schedule an appointment online here.

Thanks for your concern Deysha, but at this point in time it was a once off occurrence for me, so probably not worth it to try and diagnose. Other members on this thread may want to get in touch with you though.

This happened to me twice yesterday in my new 2017 Sport. Both times it was behind two different F150s that had the rear sensors on the bumper. Both times we were in stop and go traffic.

We're on vacation in Florida this week. For the first time in over a month of owning our 2017 Explorer the sensors have false alerted three different times. All three times there was another Ford vehicle in the immediate vicinity. Told my wife I would look it up tonight and your idea makes a ton of sense. After realizing there was always a (newer) Ford vehicle around we had kind of come to the same conclusion, but it's nice to know we're not crazy. :)

(And I should clarify. Once it went off as if we were parking and were too close to the vehicle in front of us (although we were nowhere near it. The other two times the sensor screen went crazy and showed sensors on both the front and the back of the vehicle going off. Both of these times the other Ford was behind us.)

I have had this on my 2017 Explorer Limited. But it does not happen only with Ford cars. I have had instances where a cone(like 15 feet away) was making the side sensors go off. At another time I was pulling out of a shopping center and a curb (a full lane away from me) made it go off. No cars around me. Took a video of it. Already took it to the dealership but they could recreate anything so they told me to bring it another day if it still happens.

all these so called auto driving, accelerating and braking cars are going to bite them in the ass. Especially the braking when the vehicle thinks theres something infront when there isn't. Hopefully the vehicle behind has the same automatic braking abilities and stops in time also. Imagine an entire highway slamming on the brakes years from now because the car infront had a false hazard on the road.. Sooner or later these features will become standard like ABS brakes and air-bags.

Don't you have Collision Warning? If you do, you have what is called Pre Collision Assist (pages 227 and 228). This is sometimes referred to as Brake Assist.

Peter

I too have had my sensors go off when getting near another Ford product.

Just another thought, I wonder if the driver in front gets the notice too. They probably think some jerk is rolling up behind them way too close.
