I so tune-ups as my hundreds of ways to make more money and worked on another X. I have not changed hte plugs on an X in a year since mine and was not looking forward to it. This time I attacked it a little different I did the the 4,5, and 6 plugs first and then the 1. The number 2 I just changed like the other side except I removed the air intake tube, piece of cake. THen for the feared 3. I put the spark plug socket on and took a 3/4 closed end of a wrench and broke it free, then I put the socket wrench on to get it the rest of the way, no extension at all. To put it back on I went through the wheel well wiht the plug in the socket and hand tightened it. Then I Put the socket wrench on to tighten some more and then the closed 3/4's to finish. Never went through the wheel well except to pu the plug on to hand tighten. I wsa done in 1 1/2 hours.

What do you mean when you say you used the closed end of a wrench to break the number 3 spark plug free when the spark plug socket was still on the spark plug. And if the socket wasn't on the plug how would you get the wrench in there anyway. Maybe you're talking about something different so i'm just confused. If you had a picture or something that would be great or if you could try to explain it again.

Some spark plug sockets have a hexagonal head where the ratchet goes into the socket. I bet he had the socket on the plug, and used the wrench to turn the socket.
