For a while, I've been having problems producing power from my 4.0L OHV. Even when floored, it would only reach 3300 RPMs and then slam down to about 2400, not a very wide range of RPMS. It would accelerate quickly, but there was no throaty sound, nor was there the type of "throw me back in my seat" response that I so desired...I was kind of disappointed.:(
That is, until I figured out the problem. After searching the engine and checking my vacuum, I finally discovered the problem...my floor mats. Yeah, me in my infinite wisdom (dripping with sarcasm) decided to get wayyyyyyy oversized car mats from pep boys (there's my first mistake ;) ) and it turns out the mat was bunching up behind the accelerator. So, I took out my floor mats and tested my 4.0L today and what a world of difference. On flooring, it revved up to 4600RPMs and got up to 66 mph on first gear (is that good???). Anyway, I was very impressed with the engine, but very depressed with my investigative skills.
At least bruised egos are free to repair. :D

oh, thats why the double post... please delete the other thread.....

thats a hellavua high rear gear (low numerically) to reach 66 MPH in 1st. with 3.73s mine is in 3rd by then

maybe your rear end has a 3.08 in it?

Sorry about the double post, my computer freaked on me, how do I delete?
Matt- I don't know about my gears, I probably should check it out.

HA HA HA, that's the funniest thing ive heard in a long time!

Sorry man, but this ranks in the top 10. :D

:p

I've had this problem before. No offense, but that's the first thing I checked.

Take this as a learning experience: always check the simple things first and systematically. Like with accel issues, start with the pedal and work your way to the throttle body. Then go to other things.

I'm sorry I didn't suggest the floor mats, but usually people check those before they post problems and it didn't cross my mind.

I'm proud to be in the top ten!:D :D Wait, top ten of what??? ;)
Alec, you have a great point. Check the small easy components first, and then tear apart your engine, not the other way around. At least my engine is running better than ever...as long as I don't put those stupid mats back in...
(silent moment to bow head in shame)
;) Greg

ever have the floormats slide over the pedal and pin it to the floor? that has happened to me before. i floored it on the highway, then set the cruize and let off the gas. it kept accelerating like hell. you should seen me punching the "OFF" button on my steering wheel. luckily i didnt crash or anything, and the floormats are now in a dumpster behind a local resturant.

Glad to see I'm not the only one battling floor mats. Good for you Fred! Fight the power!!:chug:

yeah! damn mats got what they deserved! i wasnt using them to protect the carpet from being stained, just using them to cover the stains up. its not like i care about my carpet anyway.
