I have a 1996 XLT with the Control Trac 4wd system. It has the 2wd, 4wd Auto (Control Trac), and 4wd low. The Control Trac system works great in bad weather, but I am not very partial to the idea of only have power to the front wheels (4wd) when the rear wheels slip. I am interested in having a real 4wd system. I know the 97+ Explorers have 4wd Auto, 4x4 Hi, and 4x4 low, which is a much more appealing system, having the option of real 4wd. My question: are there any other options for replacing the system I currently have? Would the new t-case (From the 97+ Explorers) work on my Explorer? The only negative I can think of is that with the Newer systems, would I be able to put lockers on my truck with 4wd Auto? Is 4wd Auto as good, if not better than 4x4 hi? My primary reason is that 4wd Auto does not seem like the best option for serious offroad use, am I wrong in thinking this? I hope I didn't confuse anyone, any help would be greatly appreciated.
