I have always slathered mine in wheel bearing grease...I never had a problem?
Personally, I wouldn't do that. The brake area gets super hot and might melt regular grease. I've seen tube grease melt/run/leak just from being in the sun in a black hand pump. The synthetic grease above is graphite, molybdenum and teflon. It's super thick and it stays where you put it. It's good for slow but high pressure areas. Whereas wheel bearing grease is meant to be pretty fluid and more for high speed.
