OK, so i'll start by saying i have searched this and havent come up with anything. I do have a haynes manual which doesnt help much. I have a 2000 explorer with the 4.0 OHV. I'm changing the front crankshaft oil seal that goes into the timing cover. I have the damper pully off. There was not a oil seal (like the new one TIMKEN part # 2012V) visible from the front. There was however an oil seal that fit into a "groove" in the lip of the timing cover. I did rebuild this engine about 5 years ago and do not remember that seal being in there from the factory (the timken one). The problem is the new seal (timken 2012v) slips into the boss of the timing cover with no press at all. I can spin the seal when it is seated back against the cover lip. I would say the seal is about .020" too small. However this is the correct part # on the autozone website and the one they ordered for me. I guess i'm wondering if they have two different covers? One takes a "groove" seal and the other the standard timken seal? I did notice a cover in another thread that was "bored" all the way through (didnt have the lip with the groove in it ). Any thoughts ???
