There are three or four threads on this subject... additionally, more info on your vehicle type, year, etc... is needed (I know it's under 02-05, but 4.6, 4x4, etc.) :)

I assume you have a 2002 - 2005 Ex since you are posting in this forum. The manual calls for 80W-90 gear oil in the front, but a nice fully compatible upgrade is 75W-90 synthetic oil. The 90 part is the viscosity of the oil when warm at operating temp and the 75W or 80W part is the pourability of the oil when cold. One really can't find a synthetic 80W-90 gear oil as synthetics have better cold performance than dino oils and will all be at least 75W-90.

The front diff has only an upper fill plug. I got my old fluid out by siphoning out the oil. Another method is to remove the differential cover to drain and then refill. I refilled with Dead Link Removed

i got a 2002 explorer 4.0 4x4. I was reading people are sayng that 70-140w is best to use. Is this correct?

For the rear...

The manual shows this to be the best for the rear diff... ;)

Close.

The manual for a 2002 V6 4.0 4WD 4 door calls for "synthetic 75W-140" in the rear diff and "80W-90" in the front diff. There may have been a few 2002's that called for synthetic 75W-90 in the rear, but Ford issued several TSB's that corrected that to 75W-140.

For the front differential, a synthetic 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil can be used (I would say should be used) instead on non-synthetic 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil. The synthetic exceeds the performance of the non-sythetic across all temperatures.

If you have a limited slip rear differential, you should put in 4oz of the limited slip friction modifier meeting Ford's EST-M2C118A standard. There are no factory installed front limited slip differentials in the Ex, so the friction modifier is never needed in the front.

This one... or the upgrade

So what oil do i use for the front differential?

This doesn't answer the question? :)

My manual seems to be off a bit from the 02, so I can't say... but the 03 says 1.7 liters or1.8 quarts.

I have the '04 AWD which makes the Front/Rear open so I don’t need LSD additive. When I did mine, using the siphon method, it took about a bottle and a half. I used Mobil 1 synthetic 80W-90 for the front. However after reading other’s posts it was suggested that the only reason they used the 80w90 is to save on Cost, 80w-90 was like $8 for a bottle while the 75w-140 is $14. Some even said when shops rebuild the fronts they’ll use 75w-140. If I were to do it again id just buy 3 bottles full synthetic of 75w-140 for Front/Rear. Besides Mobile 1, I think AMSOIL and Royal Purple also are full synthetic
