Front differential

For clarification. you mean NO traction device, not even a Limited Slip? And for my continued education... why not?

I wouldn't install a traction device in the FRONT of something with IFS just because I don't trust the strength of the CVs. Keeping it an open diff acts like a fuse: when the going gets tough, the tire with no traction gets all the torque.

And the front has pretty limited benefit anyway. Put something good in the rear. And in a lot of cases, the factory LS might not be up to the task of harder core wheeling. Those that I know with lockers front and rear, use the front only while snow wheeling while the rear gets used much more.

Steering is part of it, but unless you have the throttle pinned and that LS is fully engaged, steering probably won't be an issue. But with a front locker- absolutely steering is tough.

All that said, I do have Truetracs front and rear. But I have a solid axle up front and a manual transfer case so that front axle doesn't engage on the street like the ControlTrac transfer case would.

Truetracs are great in the dirt and rocks but don't engage all the time while snow wheeling. And if you have limited articulation, it might not engage if you have a wheel in the air or mostly unloaded. A true locker is best in both of those conditions.

I'm running a torson in front of my ranger. I have 15000 mi on my v8 build and haven't had an issue with the front diff. Can't even notice it till your in 4wd. Had it out wheeling a few times and beat on it a good bit, still on the same cv axles and I'm running 4.88s with 35s.

Factory front Trac-loc LSD were an option back when font axles were solid. I have no experience with TTB so I can't say if they offered it then or not.

My 79 Bronco has a factory D44 with a Trac-loc that will be narrowing for my EX at some point.

After driving that 79 for 18 years I can say that on wintery roads a front LS diff can be a handful. They push in corners pretty bad compared to an open diff. And a true locker would just be a terrible idea for a street truck IMO.

I have found If you aim your front tires the way you want to go and gas it, the front Trac-loc will pull you where you want to go but it will be a wide turn (pushing).

I believe I seen in this thread that someone said that a front Trac-loc is less desirable then rear Trac-loc. This is wrong to me.

I want the tires with the most weight doing most of the work and like I said they will pull you where you want to go. I would much rather have a front LS and an open rear for a mainly street vehicle.

I can't count how many times that front Trac-loc saved the day. Say you slide into a ditch, mud, snow, ice, whatever, you just turn the steering wheel in the direction you want to go and smash the throttle and it will pull you out. Of course having 35'' tires and a nasty 460 under the hood helps too...lol

What is wrong with your present front diff? If anything, the best thing you could do, would be to install a "True-Trac" clutchless full-time limited slip diff. in it, if one is available for your diff. type. imp
And that means what
