Hey,

i'm a jeep CJ5 guy with a question that i'm hoping you explorer guys can help me with.

in short, i want to run a CV DS in the rear of my CJ5. not having the money for a fancy new one, i'm looking else where for possible alternatives.

ne ways, i've been told that explorers use a fairly heavy duty front CV style driveshaft that uses 1310 joints. is that accurate? and if so, what year/models should i be looking for when i go junkyard shopping? and would you say this front DS is tough enough to be run in the rear of my CJ5, which has a 360 V8, 4.56 gears, locker, and 35" Boggers??

happy trails,
bigmac

Yes Explorers use 1310s all around.

The 91-94 Explorer used a double-cardan type of front CV shaft at the transfer case.
The 95-01 Explorer used a ball-race type of front CV shaft at the transfer case.

So while both types are CVs, I'm assuming you probably want the 91-94 because the 95+ has a weird cup-looking interface that bolts up to the transfer case.

As for the strength, the weakest part is almost always the U-joint so I think the shaft itself will hold up. If however you don't think its strong enough, you can always sleeve it with another tube :D

Hey,

thanks for the info.
