2000 Mercury Mountaineer
2000 Mountaineer. 4.0L. 320,000 miles. Runs good!

1. Traction control switch (on dash) set to "AUTO".

2. Motor off.

3. Front end jacked up, on jackstands, both front tires off ground.

4. Passenger side tire spins pretty freely by hand, and while spinning the tire by hand, front driveshaft doesn't turn.

5. Driver's side tire spins by hand, but takes some effort, and while spinning driver's side tire by hand, *front driveshaft spins*.

Are #2 and #3 normal? If #3 not normal, what's causing front driveshaft to spin.

Thanks to everyone!

Driver's side brake disk is causing slightly less drag than passenger side brake, thus upsetting the "balance" between the two axles. Nothing unusual there. Hold driveshaft from turning, rotate one or the other tire, and note that the opposite tire will turn the opposite direction! imp
