I replaced the lower ball joints on a friends 98 Explorer 5.0 AWD because they had a lot of up and down play, plus I thought that was the cause of the noise on rough roads. All of the bushing looked ok and everything else felt tight. So after I finished the job I slid behind the wheel all fat dumb and happy thinking I had the problem solved. No change at all, still the same annoying clunk over rough roads. I even encountered a slight death wobble after going over an expansion strip in a right hand curve at about 35mph, it stopped once I straightened out the steering wheel. Is it possible that the noise is cause by the upper ball joint studs fitting loose in the steering knuckle?

theres really only a few possibilities.
Ball joints
Sawybar Links
Wheel bearings
Shocks/Springs

Just a matter of narrowing it down.

Swaybar links look good and the bushings are all there, wheel bearing have no play in them, so it must be the upper balljoints.
